These men's rights activists are using a 1950s law to shut down women in tech

Stephanie Burns came up with the idea for Chic CEO, a free online platform for female entrepreneurs, in 2008, when she was getting her MBA. Many of her friends had lost jobs in the recession and were asking her for tips on how to start their own businesses. After hosting about 15 friends at her San Diego home to exchange advice, Burns realized there was a market for offering entrepreneurial guidance to women. A year later, she launched her company.

Up until 2014, the focus of her work involved providing practical business advice to women in the form of free, easy-to-follow online materials. Every so often, Burns also organized networking events for women at which attendees could sip cocktails and chat about work. It was to one of these gatherings, held at an Italian restaurant last April in downtown San Diego, that two men showed up.

What happened next would be the fuel for lawsuits against her, her company, the company that her business partner’s husband owned and the restaurant. It would ultimately lead to the demise of Burns’ company, and still threatens to derail the women-in-tech events that have begun popping up in Silicon Valley.

Two men named Allan Candelore and Rich Allison, who had each prepaid a $20 registration fee on the Chic CEO website, tried to enter the restaurant. According to a legal complaint that they later filed with National Coalition for Men president Harry Crouch, Burns turned them away at the door, saying the event “was only open to women.” They took a photo, left the premises, then promptly initiated legal action, turning to a 1959 California law originally written to prevent discrimination against minorities and women.

““My overall impression of this group is that their purpose is to track and bait and relentlessly ask to be invited until they get a ‘no,’ so they can bring a suit,”

Of course——like the gays who want a wedding cake——keep at it until they get turned down

It’s becoming The American Way.

Yeah, that whole "equal protection under law" thing can cause problems like this ...

“Sadly, most of the cases are abusing the law,”

Then next time craft a law saying that fair treatment is not applicable to white Christian men. The USSC will have a much easier time slapping it down that way.

The folks who cry disparate impact and racism because a housing complex doesn’t have enough black applicants who qualify are crying about a law being abused to get results they don’t like.

They can shove it.

You have to love the logic of these women’s groups. They claim they should have an exemption as female centric groups because they do not cause any harm.

Try and get male centric businesses to claim the same exemption. Didn’t I just hear of a barber shop who wanted to cater to men only that got fined $750 for doing so?

What a mess this has become but this equality thing has come full circle and is now attacking the groups that were complaining about inequality. This is delicious to watch.

The law does not just work for some people and not others.

If sex discrimination is wrong its wrong when anyone does it.

I don’t see how this is going to shut down women in tech like its some kind of inescapable force that will prevent smart women from meeting and networking.

Guys commit the majority of violent crimes. Do we still not prosecute female murderers and attackers?

They need special things for women and minorities, they are inherently inferior and are not capable of creating things and/or accomplishing goals without massive help from others, they do not possess the temerity or drive to not only make decisions to create and pursue goals, completely on their own without guidance, but once goals are decided for them, they are simply not capable of planning and dedicating whatever resources via any sacrifices required including risking financial safety and comfort that are required to achieve them. They are fragile, and need help and somebody to hold their hand through every step. So be nice, it is unfair

Loser pays makes a nuisance settlement more rich. Without fee shifting the men here had no real damages, so their case would never have been brought.
