As a child back in the 50's I was a passenger on a coverted destroyer run by the Army - The USS Butner. We crossed the North Atlantic in the wintertime bound for Europe. I was sick from the time I stepped off the dock in NY until I stepped on in Bremerhaven. Not a hurricane, but total misery.
What was the saying the escort destroyer crews had? Something about deserving flight pay and submarine pay both because half the time they were in the air and the other half under water?
