Story says he was a citizen from birth because his mother was a citizen. However, family applied for LPR status (green card) for all others in family (who probably were not citizens) and applied for him, too (as a child). That was the mistake. He knew he was a citizen, but only card he had was the Green Card parents wrongly got for him. Tough contradiction between those who want everyone to prove citizenship and those who don’t want citizens to have to carry any papers.
A DNA biometric for each individual will make "papers" obsolete.
A lot of folks wouldn’t want the government to have a “DNA biometric” on them. How about you?
“To go to even to and from Mexico or Canada now one needs a passport or passport card for land travel.”
When did that stupidity start?
I have always crossed those borders with just my drivers license.
Heck I even went to the Bahamas without a Passport.
You can get out but it is tough to get back in.
I was crossing as late as 2004, especially Mexico, once to Canada, and never had a seconds problem.
Came back from Mexico with armloads of goodies also.
Flashed my DL, and walked, or drove on.
As of January 8, 2007 the regulations changed to require a passport to travel anywhere outside of the US. It was part of the "U.S. Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004".
You were able to cross the border of Mexico and Canada by land you were allowed to continue to use just a driver's license until January 1, 2009.
10-4 Thanks for the info.
Wife and I are hopefully moving to NM after the first of the year, so good to know.
Thanks.
Probably lost his full time job as well or did we support this...citizen.
I was boooorn in the USA. ..that’s not a Datsun it’s a Chevrolet!
If that can lick the illegal problem, yes. All the INS would have would be a DNA, no photo, no fingerprints, no corneal scan, no other biometric, no signature. Against this, they would record, for aliens only, illegal entries, visa overstays, a rap sheet and deportations. On contact, a person would be asked for proof of citizenship. If they did not have it, their DNA would be checked. In a few years, this will be possible in a few minutes with a small portable device.
The need for passports to travel to and from Mexico and Canada started in 2009.
Thanks, someone else hit me with that wonderful fact a little while ago.
I guess I see the reason, but just like guns, instead of enforcing the law, they make it more inconvenient for regular citizens.
Typical gubmint BS.
Customs officials saw an arrest record with the most recent entry six years ago.
What they left out, of course, were the details of this criminal's criminal record.
Fortunately, the laws governing DHS/ICE removal processing of green card holders (what ICE believed this guy to be) gives us a clue. The guy has a serious rap sheet.
If DHS processed this guy for removal as a green card holder it means he had at least TWO CONVICTIONS FOR CRIMES INVOLVING MORAL TURPITUDE (homicide, rape, child molestation, robbery, burglary, theft, etc), or at least ONE CONVICTION OF AN AGGRAVATED FELONY (usually a year in prison), or at least ONE CONVICTION for Narcotics violations (usually trafficking, always beyond pot possession), or ONE FIREARMS-related conviction.
In other words, the subject of this sob story propaganda piece is a criminal, almost certainly a felon.
His reentry to our homeland is the tragedy, not his detention.
