Full lunar eclipse in September

Zodiac constellations this month include Sagittarius (the archer), Capricorn (the goat) and Aquarius (the water-carrier), and sinking into the west is Scorpio (the scorpion) with Saturn, our only remaining evening "star," in its midst.

Three of our former evening "stars," Venus, Jupiter and Mars, are now morning objects, but only Venus, rapidly climbing into the morning sky before dawn, is much visible as yet.

The autumnal (or fall) equinox is on Sept. 23, marking the end of summer and beginning of autumn.

For the best spectacle of the month: A full lunar eclipse (sometimes called a "blood moon") occurs on Sept. 27. The sun sets at 6:59 p.m. and the moon will have risen just four minutes earlier at 6:55 p.m. When it rises, the moon will already be partially eclipsed.

The eclipse becomes total at 7:11 p.m.

Please note, the information about the eclipsed full moon rising applies to the western third of North America. Further east, the eclipse will begin after moonrise, and progressively later by local time zones as you go east. In the eastern time zone, the totality will last from about 10 p.m. to midnight. Mid-eclipse is 0253 GMT 28th, subtract four hours for eastern daylight time to get 2253h 27th, five hours for central daylight time 2153h 27th, etc. The full moon is also perigeean so it will be a big target for the earth’s shadow. Lunar perigee is almost concurrent with the full moon at 02h GMT.
