'Norway Took my Child Because of Pretty Dress'
The Local ^ | 28 Aug 2015

A Lithuanian mother living in Norway who had her two children taken into care has speculated that social services intervened because of her daughter was dressed too prettily.

Airida Pettersen, who moved to Norway in 2008 after marrying a Norwegian man, is one of several hundred immigrants to have had their children taken into care by Norway's Child Protection Service, or Barnevernet.

"I dress my daughter in a pretty dress and make her comb her hair," she told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from Lithuania. "They look at me like I'm from a Third World country. In my country if you don't take care of yourself you don't get a husband."

She told AP that she had yet to receive an explanation from the CPS as to why her children were taken.

The children have now been reunited with their mother through the intervention of a relative and are now living in Lithuania's capital Vilnius

The child protection services in Stavanger, Norway did not comment of the specific case, but cited cultural differences when speaking to AP.

“Very many people come from other cultures with no government intervening in their domestic affairs. Then they come to Norway and the government intervenes in the family and they have no experience with this,” said Gunnar Toresen, head of the Child Protection Service in Stavanger.

Pettersen's case is not unique. According to the latest available statistics 6,737 children were taken into care in 2012, some 1,049 were immigrants or born to immigrant parents.

The actions of the Norwegian authorities have causes diplomatic disputes with a number of countries including India and Russia.

Czech president Miloš Zeman went as far as to compare Norway's foster care system to Nazi Germany's Lebensborn adoption system, expressing his anger at two Czech boys forcibly taken into care.

Norway's Minister for children and families Solveig Horne insists that Norway is acting in the best interest of children.

"There are some culture differences between families coming to Norway," Horne said.

"All children who come to Norway have the same rights as Norwegian children ... If they are neglected or abused or if there is violence in the family the (child protection) agency should protect the children first of all."

This reminds me of the story I read about a man who had convinced himself his hoarding had driven away his wife. He sought help for his hoarding problem. When the organizers arrived, they found his “hoard” was a single stack of magazines in a corner in his dining room. After spending some time with the guy, they could see he was a controlling tool, and surmised his wife must have left him because of his personality. He couldn’t face that, so came up with an explanation that made sense to himself. Without knowing the particulars here, I can’t say what triggered the action, but there’s no way any country takes a child from her home just because she’s well dressed and groomed.

“... but there’s no way any country takes a child from her home just because she’s well dressed and groomed.”

You underestimate the depth of insanity of government officials.

Nazis think they are intrinsically morally superior, so everything they do is justified.

Their actions and motives are too “nuanced” for the peasants to understand.

The Norwayians are an alien race who once visited this planet, low on fuel, they were able to return to their part of the universe by stealing a Chicago residents sox, a Mr. Al Bundy.

They’ve returned and their craft now need Lithuanian children’s dresses as fuel.

It appears that their brief interaction with Chicago or Hollywood, caused a major shift in their planets people.

IOW, they are just trying to get parents in the spirit of inspirational modeling for would-be Norwegian artists:

The dark secret of “social services” is that many times they take children because some pedophile has paid them well to do so.

No wonder the Nazis got along so well with the Norwegians...

That’s quite an assertion, I’d like to see some backup on that.

I know these people screw up too often (as even one screw up is too much) both in what they do and what they fail to do. But my father was a child welfare worker and on his behalf I must question your comment.

You’ve accused thousands or hundreds of thousands of strangers of a heinous crime, I hope that’s not just you talking off the top of your head.

CPS is an evil Nazi-like organization in the US. I imagine it’s the same in Norway. The very concept is evil - a government organization devoted to the taking of children from their parents. Only a naive fool would believe that such an organization could exist for long without regressing to its evil nature.

There’s not much information here. One fact I noticed is that the mother and children are now living in Lithuania, and there’s no mention of the mother’s Norwegian husband.

Could this all have been a custody dispute?

Well, I can’t speak to this story, not enough verifiable facts.

But child welfare agencies in the US are very political, ideology driven bureaucracies, populated by employees that have a very narrow view of what parents “should be allowed” to do.

You want a good example?

One thing that is more common that most would believe is when lazy or incompetent teachers demand that unruly children or children that simply don’t fit their “one size fits all” approach to education be put on Ritalin or similar psychoactive DRUGS. They tell parents who resist that they will call family services and have their children taken away. This is a fact, I saw it in Florida. Been going on for a long time.

The horror stories of government kidnapped children are many & varied.

Again, I don’t know about this story, but IMO one should remain very skeptical of Nanny State drones with BA’s in Social Welfare who know what is best for everyone else’s children.

In fairness, I think only the Nobel committee gives out the Nobel Prize, not the country.

Do some research on the link between sex trafficking and foster care, and sexual abuse and foster care, it’ll blow your mind.

Here’s a tip-of-the-iceberg taste of the kind of thing that goes on: http://articles.latimes.com/2013/jul/29/nation/la-na-child-sex-20130730

Does not seem to have been as the children were placed with a foster family rather then the husband.

I am trying to find some information on the husband now.
