I would guess it might have something to do with the volume we buy them in and the reduced cost for signing a service contract thatbthey use as an inducement.
The iPhone is manufactured in China,the Chinese buy more iPhones than Americans and yet the iPhone is more expensive in China.
Fact is a more open competitive smart phone market drives prices down.
