The agony and the agony of being a New York Jets fan

There is no reason I should be a fan of the New York Jets, but I am, and have no one to blame but myself.

For the past few days, howls of laughter and scorn have emanated from social media and sports radio yak shows around the country, after the Jets' nominal starting quarterback, Geno Smith, fell victim to a broken jaw, courtesy of a locker room "sucker-punch" from teammate IK Enemkpali. Smith will be out of action for six to 10 weeks, and Enemkpali was immediately released from the team.

J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS! Most agonizing moments as a JETS fan:

1: Losing the 1982/83 AFC Championship to the FISH at the Mud Bowl 2: Mark Gastineau's roughing the passer penalty costing the JETS the Divisional Playoff game at Cleveland during the 86/87 season. A season the JETS started with a record of 10-1. 3: Mark Gastineau failing to fall on a fumble during the 1981 Wild Card game against the Bills 4: In hindsight, Bill Belichick quitting after one day on the job as head coach

In short, the Jets are actually a more tortured team than even the Cleveland Browns for two reasons:

1. They've come close to getting to the Super Bowl in recent years. But in the years when they're bad, they're REALLY bad.

2. The Jets are subject to the coverage of the massive New York City area mass media--especially the loud and screaming headlines from the New York Post and New York Daily News. And that just makes the Jets' failures even worse.

Don’t feel bad. Detroit had it’s best game of the Season last night. It’s all down hill from there.

Detroit is the Football version of the Establishment Republicans. Cry for the opportunity to win. Ask for support. When they get the opportunity to win they fumble, throw interceptions, do stupid stuff that gets penalties called and miss field Goals.
