Why the rich feel entitled to shoplift

Items are often lifted by privileged shoppers who somehow feel they deserve more.

“They’d pay for one of the things they were still holding but drop something extra in their shopping bag, like their own version of a free gift,” said the Sephora insider.

At Anthropologie, some upper-middle-class women buy $400 kaftans and $500 clogs — and then “accessorize” for free.

“We were taught that our prime shoplifters were women and girls who were regular shoppers at Anthro,” said one ex-employee, who every night would find piles of security tags in the fitting rooms that were taken off apparel that day.

“They would spend insane amounts and at the same time steal a few items because they felt that given they had spent so much money, they were entitled to freebies,” the Anthro insider said.

I wonder what the markup is in those stores? I’m sure it’s at least 100% and probably higher. Regardless, theft is theft, but I wonder if some level of “inventory loss” is figured into the prices they charge.

No question. Every store does that.

All businesses include estimated losses through theft as a factor in determining prices.

The crime is considered more serious once the value hits a certain value that makes it Grand Theft. For example, in Virginia, it is $200.

If an item cost the store $10, and the store price tag is $200, the charge is probably Grand Theft. I think a clever attorney would establish the loss as $10 and reduce the charge.

Meanwhile, the store lost a big-spending customer over $10 in merchandise.

Big time markup. The clogs are no doubt sewn together in some fourth world backwater (the cobbler being paid in rice) so the production cost is nominal.

Sort of like much of our billionaire class feels entitled to import illegal aliens and H1b workers.

The store may have paid their supplier $10 to go with your example, but what about rent, insurance, utilities, salaries, franchise fees, advertising, interest on outstanding loans and yes loss due to other thefts?

They can wipe out the middle class to further fatten their wallets because they're just plain better than us - nobility and serfs.

And how does anyone guess that these rich women shoplifters regard normal people?

While touring up in Hyannis Port, I visited a small boutique and asked if they ever see the Kennedy's in here?

Oh, the look on their faces, you could see the "blood in their eyes". They told me the Kennedy girls never thought they had to pay for anything. They never wanted the Kennedys in their store.

Yeah, that might be the reason they gave for what they did but the root cause is simply that they are crazy as cow ticks.

The store executives should be thrown in jail for charging $500 for clogs. I’ll continue to buy my footwear on discount sale at Walmart and Payless.

People raised rich who turned out sane are the exception.

It's a free market - I'd have more sympathy with the proposition that anyone who pays $500 for clogs should be thrown in a mental institution.
