Dallas Marine Veteran Gets Home to Call His Own

A Dallas veteran and his little girl now have a home to call their own after a whole community came together to give them a place to find peace.

To say that life has been hard for 8-year-old A'naijah Anderson doesn't begin to cover it.

"Her mom and sister were killed in 2012," said her father, Ben Anderson.

They've been homeless, and now Ben Anderson has cancer. But there is a new chapter for them, one with hope. They have a new home thanks to the caring of a community.

"It gives me peace of mind that she will never be homeless," Ben Anderson said.

The home is a gift from Homevestors and the community groups Rebuilding Together and Dwell with Dignity.

It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and is located near the VA hospital in Dallas, where Anderson is receiving chemotherapy treatments. A'naijah Anderson will have her own bedroom, complete with pink frills and stuffed animals.

"It was our pleasure to do this for them," said Lisa Robison, with Dwell with Dignity. "We were so giddy to see them come through the project and see their home for the very first time."

Yolanda Williams, with the Housing Crisis Center, nominated Anderson for the Homes for Heroes program.

"I just automatically thought of Mr. Anderson," said Williams. "He is an amazing father."

"It's such a blessing to see God's work at hand," Williams added.

"I thank everybody who contributed, had a part of this. This is truly a prayer answered," Ben Anderson said. But for him, the best part is seeing his daughter smile.

"Man that is worth a million dollars," he said. "It does my heart so good when I go and leave here and go to chemotherapy today, that chemo won't mean nothing cause I got those smiles in my heart now."
