Social media is the battlefield -- like it or not
August 4, 2015 | 2Smart2BLiberal

Posted on 08/04/2015 10:08:55 PM PDT by 2Smart2BLiberal

I know that a lot of Freepers, maybe even most, despise social media, aren't comfortable using it, and are suspicious of providing information to sites that can pass it along to government agencies.

I get all that and agree.

However, I believe that we are in a raging battle for our nation's conscience and future, and, unfortunately, social media is one of the main battle fronts.

Over the past few weeks, in particular, I've been battling against the pro-abortion propaganda that has been raging on Facebook. We cannot let their lies and attacks go unanswered, and yet, many conservatives have decided that social media is beneath them.

I'm asking you to please reconsider. You can easily set up accounts that keep your identity secret and remain entirely anonymous, but please don't ignore this battlefield. We would never walk away from the front lines in so many other cases and we can't afford to do that on the social media front.

Remember how angry it made us when, during the GWB years, the onslaught of attacks went unanswered? Why didn't he defend himself and his decisions, we asked. Why did he allow the left to rage against him and never speak up? That same thing is happening now on social media. It's never ending and vicious. Facts are twisted, charges made that are false -- there is no level to which the left won't stoop to further their agenda.

To give you an idea of what is being said by the left, here are samples from a Texas news channel who posted a few sentences about the latest Planned Parenthood video and a short clip:

"Conservative's be like "I demand you to keep that baby" nine months later "I don't want my tax dollars paying for those babies""

"Third trimester terminations aren't done except in very rare situations. Very rare. But sure go ahead. Outlaw all abortions again so women have to resort to back alleys and coat hangers. Let's outlaw all birth control while we're at it! Force every woman to give birth to every child she becomes pregnant with regardless of her health or whether her family can feasibly sustain another member. Sure!"

"Except that the videos are edited to make you believe something that's not actually happening."

"The GOP ITSELF has already investigated these videos and said they found NO WRONG DOING. So drop it already! It's pure propaganda to do nothing but discredit Planned Parenthood."

"Dear GOP, Planned Parenthood does not profit from dead children, you're thinking of the NRA"

This is a tiny, tiny sampling, but do you see how they deflect the issue? In many cases they resort to attacks, name calling, drumming up straw men, you name it.

Maybe it's just me, but I am so sick of nearly 7 years of non-stop lies by Obama and his administration that this is how I'm taking action. I've given up thinking that America's problems will be solved in yet another election or by yet another politician. Now I'm focusing on changing hearts and minds in this arena.

Please consider and pray about whether or not this is something you can take on. It's exhausting and time consuming, sometimes disheartening, but with this Planned Parenthood scandal -- I'm thrilled to see the number of people who are sickened. On many threads, they're doing the battling for me, so I move on to the next one, but not before I give them a pat on the back and a thank you.

If anyone is interested, I can share with you some of my strategies.

I despise Facebook but have to be there as part of my career. I've learned how to quickly identify trolls and part of the fun is calling them out. I identify them, ridicule them, draw attention to them, dismiss them -- it can be fun.

I contend most who do social media do not vote reliably and can’t be considered part of a reliable coalition.

A monkey house is a battlefield too, but I don’t feel obliged to get in with the monkeys and fling excrement around.

Conservative's be like "I demand you to keep that baby"

Keep that what? This concedes what everybody really knows, and says, if given the chance. Just an aside.

Yes we need a stronger presence there, not just facebook but there are other popular venues. Image sites like imgur for example is a den of liberalism, I under other assumed names of course gently but surely post things that make them think, surprisingly there are quite a few conservatives lurking around and most of my pro conservative messages get upvoted, yet overall things like the gay marriage fiasco has the place partying away with thousands of votes in favor. So I do my part on social media but sure could use more folks in all these places. Conservative thinkers are supposedly in the majority, its time we took back these places from the fringe freaks.

I agree with you. We need to post more and share more. We also need to get in and state our case to those who have never thought the issues through. Even if we don’t persuade them, we might make some inroads with their friends.

This is where a lot of communication is happening these days.

You do know you are being monitored on Facebook, don’t you?

There is a difference between those who “Do” social media and those who “Observe” it but don’t participate.

It’s wise to be aware of it.....right or wrong news hits it first. Then you can research to see if true or not...but it its online before the MSM gets it.

Thanks for your post. I avoid social media, some of my family consider me kooky and not at all ‘with it.’ But maybe it’s time to join the monkeys! (H/t to steelytom)

I am thinking about your suggestions, and will consider acting, at least in some small ways at first. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks again.

I’ve taken lessons from some of the trolls there. ;)

But, like I said, this battlefield isn’t for everyone. Preaching to the choir here at Free Republic is safer, although monitored as well, I’m sure.

Exactly and that’s the type of thing that has to be pointed out.

Most everyone I know on social media absolutely despises political zealots yammering and griping no matter what their philosophy. I think you’re buying everything the Facebook and Twitter marketing departments are selling when it comes to how “opinion shaping” and “important” they are as a political platform.

Thank you! I look for threads that aren’t 90-100% raving lunatic leftists. They are truly a lost cause but they are so loud, so over-powering that they give the impression they’re in the majority. Kind of like the way gays are over-represented in pop culture. The average American believes that 20% of the population is gay because of that!

Well, even here on FR you don’t have a reliable coalition. :)

I received an email from Medicare yesterday notifying me of Medicare's Facebook page.

I clicked in to look, it's kind of useless, I was about to click out, then I started reading some of the visitor comments.

Blew my mind!

There were dozens of the most vicious and most deceitful anti-GOP and anti-Conservative comments I have ever seen!

I believe most of them were cleverly disguised Socialist spam.

All the comments were relatively short and used standard attack cliches. But, there were no misspellings or grammatical errors, which NEVER happens on a public website where political passion is in play.

Anyway - for those Americans who get their “news” from Facebook, please know that Conservatives, Republicans, and Billionaires are trying to destroy Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, and only a unified Democrat Party can stop us!

My wife didn’t get the Cruz cooking bacon on the machine gun video.
I told her, we’re not supposed to but watch it go viral.

Here on FR, we assume that everyone else stays on top of issues as we do, but that’s not the case. The millions of Americans who don’t aren’t necessarily “fools” that we can cast aside. Most of them are overwhelmed by life, responsibilities, worries — and maybe politics has just never been much of an interest. I know people like that who are very good, moral people.

That’s the group I want to reach, but they sure aren’t here on FR. I have to go out and find them. :)

Well, I stopped posting on Facebook when I saw that one of my former pastors had posted something about gay marriage from a religious perspective, and I sent him a private message saying what he said could get him into trouble, and next thing you know I get a message that my private message has been deemed abusive to the Facebook community and had been removed:

“This message is no longer available because it was identified as abusive or marked as spam.”

Obviously because it was between my pastor and me it was totally g-rated, and there was nothing in it that was controversial, but I now know saying anything questioning homosexuality gets read by someone somewhere.

To allow leftists to control yet another area in which millions of Americans get and share information and opinions is a mistake.

Once you get into social media, FB in particular, yes, the hatred and level of lies is shocking. Here on FR, we pretty much all think alike, and it’s comfortable.

Trolls are rocking FB with their canned “facts”, ridicule, etc. I’m just not willing to step away and pretend I don’t see it. At some point, it has to be answered.
