Windows 10 is taking days to activate due to server strains (Microsoft site overloaded)

Microsoft advises you to sweat it out

MICROSOFT is warning customers that their free upgrade to Windows 10 may complete but not be activated for several days.

A statement on the company website advises customers to "wait a few days and try again or just leave it and let it activate on its own. The activation servers might be overwhelmed."

The advice is hollow succour for those who, perhaps less tech-savvy, want the reassurance of knowing that they definitely have a working Windows. Microsoft revealed just a day after the launch of Windows 10 that the OS has already been installed on 14 million machines.

Windows 10 started its staged rollout at 5am BST on 29 July as Microsoft undertook one of the biggest software distributions in history, described by the company as like "buying pizza for 1.5 billion people".

...

Statement from the Microsoft site itself:

How to Activate and resolve common Product key issues in Windows 10

"...Activation servers are being overwhelmed at the moment because of the volume of upgrades, so give it some time if you get an error message such as (0XC004E003, ,0x8007000D, 0x8007232b or 0x8007007B) Windows 10 will eventually activate as long as you upgrade using the appropriate method..."

I'm shocked... SHOCKED! How many people are trying to activate Windows 10 at once?

Anyway, patience is a virtue, I've been told.

Windows 10 activation may take a few days, be patient ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

D’loaded and installed with no problems at 7 AM Eastern on the 29th.

And I’m on Comcast!

I wonder if that’s the problem I was having last night. I have a windows 7 vm that I recently installed that normally doesn’t have internet access allowed on it, that was bugging me about activation, and it kept bitching when I tried to activate it. It seems like it was indicating the product key and version mismatched (i.e., “the key is not right for Win7 pro” or some garbage like that).

Ended up rebuilding and going through the reboot two-step today while I was working. Every once in a while I’d check to see if it was ready for the next reboot. Windows update is astoundingly primitive.

Probably not. It's just that there's no economic sense in equipping a server farm for a worst-case load if it's only going to be transient. I'm sure Microsoft has sufficient capability for the sustained activation load. But at first, the peak will exceed capability for maybe a week or two.

It makes sense. But it's frustrating to users, so it's worth mentioning.

Got mine, took from 0630 to 800 Saturday. No hiccups. I won’t rant and rave about it yet, all I wanted was for it to be better than 8.1 and it is. No complaints so far.

I’m waiting for my upgrade notice. I’ve been tempted to burn an ISO and upgrade now, but I would have to find the product key for my windows 8 upgrade and am lazy about digging for it.

It sounds like it is better to have waited anyway.

It's amazing what one can get away with, when one has a solid 90% market share.

User complaints about clunkiness? "Here's a quarter..."

YUP! No problems but I do miss the charms bad.

W10 boots faster than 8.1 on mrs p6’s HP laptop. Edge is very clean and fast.

No problems other than a minor issue with Cortana that is probably driver related and will probably be resolved Threshold 2 in October or I’ll do it myself.

Even the hard-core Windows haters are generally willing to say Windows 10 is better than Windows 8.x

Might be damning with faint praise, but it's true, it is better in nearly every respect than its predecessor.

Microsoft is recording everything. I do not believe the OFF button works!

Earlier post and first impressions: Installed Windows 10 on my laptop. I will not install it on my primary desktop pc. It did not update well on the laptop plus it is slower then the Windows 7 I had on the laptop.

The Start button would not work when clicked on plus I received this error on most anything else I wanted to open.

“This app can’t open, your trial period for this app has expired”

The fix after doing many searches the fix was fairly simply. Right click on the Start button and click on Run then type:

SFC /SCANNOW

This fixed the issue. I was seeing Windows 7 dialog boxes. In short Windows 10 is another shell over Windows 7/Vista/XP....
You can use Start10 http://www.stardock.com/products/start10 or get themes here for your own look. Most look to be for XP or 7 for now: http://www.stardock.com/products/themes/

The new IE called Edge is different so if you want you can switch to IE11. Go to the “C” drive then Program Files then Internet Explorer folder then create a shortcut to the desktop by dragging iexplore.exe icon onto the desktop by holding down your right mouse button then let go once on the desktop. I use Firefox.

A positive is sharper text. But alas you cannot change the font or color of the text. See bottom of page. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/make-text-screen-larger-smaller/?v=t

I use a 3rd party program called Iconoid http://www.sillysot.com to change the font color. You cannot pick other solid background colors other then the small selection Microsoft offers you. A work around is to google “solid colors” and pick out an image you find then save it then use it as a background.

Photos & folders open slower. I know there will be issues but if you are curious then backup your hard drive to an external hard drive with free software like Aomei Backupper http://www.aomeitech.com/aomei-backupper.html

Yeah, I really like the efficiency of Windows 10 reporting every letter you type, every web page you open, every button you click and every image you view directly to the NSA and Microsoft’s marketing databases. Much streamlined from the earlier versions when they had to actually go to some efforts to watch your every move.
