The underlying OS is quite good, it’s the crappy human interface that has been killing 8 and 8.1. But there is a very simple fix:

Just install “Classic Shell” and Win 8.1 turns into Win 7. After six months, it’s been exceptionally stable, and I never see the useless Metro interface.

I agree. The interface on Windows * is just awful. I wrote better ones twenty years ago.
