Almost Half of All Criminal Cases Are Filed in Five Districts On U.S. Southern Border

Almost half of all federal criminal cases are filed in five districts on U.S. southern border

posted at 1:21 pm on July 8, 2015 by Bruce McQuain

41.7% of all Federal criminal charges come from 5 districts that are on the US southern border. In one district, West Texas, the US attorney filed 5,832 cases. That’s more than all the cases filed for the entire length of the US norther border (5,257). The southern district of Texas ranked 2nd, followed by Arizona, New Mexico and Southern California.

And that’s not all:

“In addition to criminal cases brought before United States district judges, the United States Attorneys also handle a considerable criminal caseload before United States magistrate judges,” explained the U.S. attorneys’ statistical report for fiscal 2013. “The utilization of magistrate judges varies from district to district in response to local conditions and changing caseloads.”

“Magistrate judges are authorized by statute to perform a variety of duties as assigned by the United States district judges, including presiding over misdemeanor trials, conducting preliminary hearings, and entering rulings or recommended dispositions on pretrial motions,” said the report.

In fiscal 2014, according to the Table 2B, 67,401 criminal defendants were determined to be guilty in magistrate proceedings. Of those, 63,253 — or 93.8 percent — were in the five districts along the U.S.-Mexico border.

And yet this administration has, for its entire tenure, ignored the crisis on the border and even encouraged illegal immigrants to enter the country. While some may buy into the argument that the fault lies with Congress (and, more specifically the GOP) for not passing immigration reform legislation, the problem at the border is a law enforcement problem.

Law enforcement is not a Congressional duty, but instead, the job of the Executive branch. However, despite their being laws on the books concerning illegal immigration, this administration refuses to enforce them and has, in fact, has defied them. Compound that with blue cities offering sanctuary to illegals (again, in defiance of existing law) and you have a situation out of control.

I was listening to Laura Ingram on the way to dinner last night and she had absolutely NO response when her guest George Wills said that there are more illegals here now than 20 years ago, and America is a safer place: ergo Illegals are great for the US.

She just let him spew. No rebuke.

Yep, it is getting to be a prickly subject alright. Some of the candidates are imploding on the issue as more and more attention is called to how bad the situation really is.

Yesterday on Tucson conservative radio, there was a news story at the top of the hour about building more prisons, and the spokesperson said that we build too many prisons and we should not be spending more money on them.

No mention of why we need them.

Listen at `3: 17 point.

Crime rate is lower with illegals as a whole. Just as employment rate participation is higher than US population as a whole.

“The District of Western Texas was again No. 1, with 7,302 criminal defendants found guilty in U.S. district court. Southern Texas was second with 6,484. Arizona was third with 4,957. New Mexico was fourth with 4,392. And Southern California was fifth with 4,100.

The 27,235 criminal defendants found guilty in U.S. district courts in the five U.S. attorneys’ districts along the U.S.-Mexico border equaled 36.6 percent of all 74,392 criminal defendants found guilty in all 93 U.S. attorneys’ districts in fiscal 2014.”

One could say crime is down (or up) because Seinfeld went off the air. I would not be surprised if much of the decrease in crime is due to the baby bust, and therefore less black criminals.

Crime rates are lower for illegals because they predatorize a lot upon other illegals in this country who DON’T REPORT the crimes...

and a lot of illegal immigrant crimes Against citizens are also shut up...

Grace, after my husband and I turned off the radio, open mouthed, we cited the same reasons as you did.

The rational also goes that you don’t do sweeps through businesses or apartment buildings where illegals are because then they will be further reluctant to report crimes, and what we are really concerned with is hard-core criminals, not just border crossers who are here for a “better life for their kids.”

I don't disagree with the conclusion of the posted article, that there is a lot of crime going on near the Mexican border, and the illegal invasion is a major factor.

But blanket comparisons of federal judicial districts on crime statistics are difficult to interpret because of because these districts are hardly created equal. They vary widely in population, demographics, terrain, rural vs. urban, the mindset of the chief US Attorney of each district and the size and mindset of his/her staff, the kinds of crime that they like to prosecute and the kinds of crime that they'd rather not.

BTW, Rush Limbaugh went into the posted article in some length on his show today.

“23,387 were found guilty of drug offenses. 12,617 were found guilty of violent crime.” According to this study.

Last night Humanity brought up these stats ( quoted from Perry last year.”

““Sean, there have been over the course of the last five years, since the fall of ’08, over 203,000 individuals who have come into Texas illegally who have been booked into our county jails. Those individuals have accounted for over 3,000 homicides and over 8,000 sexual assaults. We can’t afford to wait for Washington to secure this border. We’ve had enough.”

3,000 homicides and over 8,000 sexual assaults just in Texas!

Yes, it's a disgrace. And Trump is causing some politicians to wake up after so many years of pretending that illegal aliens were harmless or even beneficial to the US.

That has been a common tactic; why get in an argument if they other person won’t listen.

I say, speak the truth and let it hand in the air like an broken diamond. ( Okay, that’s flowery.) But the truth is beautiful and should be brought out against falsehoods, regardless of effect on dunderheads. The truth has an ability to burrow through.
