It had been nearly 400 days since Jose Fernandez stepped onto the mound in a major league game.
The long road to get back from Tommy John surgery was trying but ultimately inspiring. Appropriatedly, so his triumphant return to the Marlins in a rollicking matinee revival Thursday at Marlins Park.
After a slow start, the charismatic Cuban not only resurrected the magic of his Rookie of the Year 2013 season, he contributed an uplifting home run that sent the Marlins on course for a 5-4 victory that concluded a three-game sweep of the defending World Series champions.
Fernandez, now 13-0 in his career at home, overcame a rocky beginning to complete six innings in which he gave up three runs and seven hits while striking out six with no walks. He departed with a 5-3 lead.
The moment that most thrilled the crowd of 32,598 youth campers and work-skipping adults came when Fernandez led off the bottom of the fifth by launching a Matt Cain fastball 404 feet to left field for his second career home run.
A few batters later Justin Bour hit his third homer of the series, a three-run blast into the upper deck in right to give the Marlins their first lead. It came less than 24 hours after Bour delivered a walk-off three-run homer in the ninth inning Wednesday.
Relievers Mike Dunn, Carter Capps and A.J. Ramos (12th save) preserved the lead after the final three innings, although Capps gave up a solo homer to Buster Posey in the eighth.

I love watching this kid pitch and play the game. His attitude (due to his life story) is perfect. Great to have him back on the mound.
I’m a Nats fan, and I dig him thus far too. He knows that there are worse things than giving up homers in the big leagues, gives him a maturity and ability to just enjoy pitching most starters don’t have at his age.
Freegards
After watching Casilla’s performance yesterday I’m ready to give baseball a little rest.
Unfortunately for the Marlins, they just lost Giancarlo Stanton for 4-6 weeks.
