The “factoids” of this beg somethinkng...

one is lower rate of adult onset (type 2)diabetes from 1 study in Japan... lets look at the logic here..

Obesity is a primary cause of Type 2 Diabetes .

People that are obease often try to diet

those that do often drink diet drinks.

So Effect = Type 2 diabetes

Purported Cause = (factoid) Diet soda..

Probable actual cause Obesity. of which Diet soda consumption is an probable effect.

You might find this interesting:

Artificial sweeteners may do more than sweeten

I have read other studies recently that examine insulin response to artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners were approved for Type I diabetes where there is a lack of insulin. No research was done previously on Type II or insulin resistance.

Ok, I will give up my daily diet cokes....but not the fifth of whiskey, the two packs of Camels, my 5000 calories of meals, and my after-dinner cigar.

I like diet because I cannot can’t stand the sickening sweet taste of any sugared drinks, to keep blood sugar levels lower, and hold down calories.

I drink flavored club soda. No sweeteners. The flavor is very faint but enough that it is better than unflavored. Diet soda wreaks havoc on my bladder. I will drink maybe one or two a week.

Bourbon is another story altogether.

put down the can and cool down with an unsweetened iced tea instead.

I take it one step further: unsweetened tea mixed with soda water. Fizzy iced tea!

The jury is still out, according to my wife (the skeptic).

My ex-daughter-in-law who is a Ph. D. in Chemistry tells me that aspartame is a very small protein that is not even digested by the body.

As Lewis Black said in one of his shows, no one knows what a good diet or bad diet is. What you eat might kill the guy next to you.

Moderation is the key.

Most non-diet soda available in the US is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. HFCS is worse than sugar...but it’s cheap.

Prior to the 1980s soda had cane sugar. Then they started using HFCS and the obesity rate skyrocketed.

Soda, both regular and diet, is a chemical cocktail. Drink it if you like.

I prefer lemon water with some mint leaves mixed in. Better than plain water.

I’ve never drunk “diet” soda.

I’ve been on the “gain 5 lb/year plan” most of my life and reached 340lb (6ft). Many attempts to curb the trend ... a few major bounces. Then I stopped eating anything sweet, mostly to get away from fructose. I have no other diet rules. I’ve been losing five pounds a month for the last six months. I have no urges to eat, and I tend to get restless if I sit for too long — less food, more activity. This goes much farther than the missing sugar calories.

The theory behind the fructose abstinence comes from Dr. Lustig’s “Sugar, the Bitter Truth” video on Youtube.

I have read that artificial sweeteners are not only consciously tasted by the tongue, but also throughout the body by “unconscious” sugar regulating systems. It seems the artificial sweeteners are not metabolically inert, and will effect your appetite and the way your body handles fat and sugar.

The best advice, I think, is to eat what your great grandparents ate.

It’s nice to bend in the middle again.
