VANCOUVER - A woman who was mauled to death by a lioness in South Africa was a Vancouver-based visual effects editor on a volunteer mission to protect wildlife, her family says.

Kate Chappell, 29, was a "brilliant, kind, adventurous and high-spirited" woman, according to a post on her sister Jen's Facebook page.

"Her energy and passion could not be contained by mere continents or oceans. She was very much loved and shared her love for life with those she met," the post read.

Chappell worked on blockbusters including "Godzilla," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Divergent," and contributed to a 2014 "Game of Thrones" episode that won an Emmy, according to her profile on Internet Movie Database.

She grew up in the New York suburbs and spent the past year in Vancouver working for a special effects company, her mother Mary told The Journal News.

Her profile said she had worked for Scanline VFX, a company with offices in Vancouver and L.A.

"The park allows tourists to drive through the preserve where lions roam. A park official told AP the woman was taking pictures through an open window, even though visitors are ordered to keep windows closed, when the lioness lunged."
I assume her last conversation went thusly:

"Uh, miss, keep your window closed!"

"No way! It'll mess up my shots!"

Vancouver has a vibrant movie community. It has lost a young member. RIP

Signs are put up for a reason.

NO Exceptions.

I find it hard to bleed for “animal people” who are killed by wild animals. They seem to court their own death. Remember the man who loved grizzlies and they ate him.

Evidently, Kate's a future Darwin Awards nominee for sure!

Like these geniuses:

Playing with Cats

(2 January 1996, India) A tiger killed one man and mauled another at the Calcutta zoo yesterday when they tried to put a marigold garland around its neck in a New Year's greeting.

Prakesh Tiwari, the dead man, and Suresh Rai had been drinking before they bought the floral garlands and crossed the moat around the tiger's enclosure, authorities said. "I was shocked to see the two young men weaving about in front of a tiger with garlands in their hands, " said Rakesh Banerjee, who witnessed the attack that triggered panic and a near stampede in the zoo.

The men, both in their 20's, were trying to put the garland on a 13-year old male Royal Bengal tiger named "Shiva" after the Hindu god of destruction. When Rai threw the garland around Shiva's neck, the tiger attacked him. His friend Tiwari intervened, kicking the tiger in the face. The tiger released Rai, and attacked and killed Tiwari...

It’s damned odd that in her time working at animal preserves she failed to absorb the truth that you respect these animals at all times.

She’s there to save the wildlife. Why would they want to hurt her?

My daughter has a friend who is brilliant. Valedictorian, accepted at Harvard, etc. She's unconventional and doesn't like to be tied down. She hasn't had any tragedies (yet) but she makes one bad decision after another. Didn't go to Harvard (which may count as a good decision). Didn't go to any college. Hiked the Appalachian Trail (just because). Moved to Colorado (why not?). Just about to move to Alaska (who wouldn't?). Things may eventually work out for my daughter's "brilliant" friend, but my daughter has decided that her friend is "confused" and "makes bad choices".

Because Brilliant does not mean Wise.
