The FRiday Night Movie - Jeremiah Johnson (1972)
Zippcast ^ | N/A | N/A

Posted on 06/05/2015 8:09:31 PM PDT by DemforBush

A former solider (Robert Redford), weary and jaded by war, trades civilization for a new life in the mountains as a trapper and a loner. Life in the wild is far more difficult that it seems, however, and Johnson must learn to survive both nature, and the wrath of those he inadvertently crosses...

Co-starring Will Geer (Grandpa from The Waltons). Loosely based on the life of legendary mountain man "Liver-eatin' Johnson."

You can keep your Dances with Wolves, give me Jeremiah Johnson! Just a great movie about living life free and on one's own terms. Will Geer is an absolute hoot, and Redford is at his best. It's unfortunately not the best quality print of the movie, but I think you'll enjoy it just the same. 7.5/10.

BTW, look for small parts by Jack Colvin (Mr. McGee from The Incredible Hulk) and Paul Benedict (Mr. Bentley from The Jeffersons).

Jeremiah to the Frenchman (buried up to his neck in sand)

“Are you alone?”

“No, I got a good horse under me.”

“See anyone pass this way?”

“Well, not in front of me, but I can’t say ‘bout behind me..”

(GREAT MOVIE!)

“Mighty hunter - yes?”

“Yes”

“Fine figure of a man - yes?”

“Yes”

“Good! That’s all you need to know!”

He was gay? I never knew that. I did know he was a radical leftist (even by Hollywood standards) and a registered communist.

By 1972 when Jeremiah Johnson was released political correctness had clearly crept into moviemaking. I have always loved this picture having watched it several times while confined to bed with a broken leg. One can especially appreciate the scenery and some of the indicia of authenticity such as the 50 caliber sharps rifle, the acting in the movie was first-rate as was the direction and the score.

But notice the treatment of the Indian vs. white people, a foretaste of what was to become absolutely blatant in Dances with Wolves in which every white person except protagonist and his love interest were portrayed as warmongering (in the Civil War), crazy and alcoholic (the officer who pees his pants and commits suicide), slovenly and filthy (the mule team driver who farts), indiscriminate killers of wolves, buffalo, horses (soldiers) illiterates (soldiers) brutal and sadistic (soldiers) etc.

The Indians, on the other hand are portrayed as very human, compassionate, family oriented, idyllic, and noble savages-apart from the pesky Pawnees who are disposed of and justice is obtained.

In Jeremiah Johnson we see the white people in much the same light. Will Gere (Sp?) who plays the grizzly hunter is borderline crazy and a killer of grizzlies for sport. The men buried up to his neck is a man who would trade Jeremiah's Johnson's life for his own (how was I supposed to know they were friendly Indians?). We meet The Crazy Woman of crazy woman mountain fame(an actual mountain in Montana) who is explicitly crazy although that condition is brought on by the loss of her children in an Indian raid.

Here again, the Indians are portrayed as very human creatures, his love interest for example is more reasonable than Jeremiah Johnson himself, the Indian father who gives her away in marriage to Johnson obviously loves her, portraying strong family values etc. among the Indians, the attitude of the white trapper who would have traded Jeremiah Johnson's life for his own is quite cavalier about taking squaws as wives. He has a misogynistic streak as does the grizzly hunter who can find no sign on a woman's heart.

By every comparison then white values are inferior to Indian ethos.

References to the war with Mexico which was one of the great victories of the manifest destiny movement adding the entire Southwest to United States is disposed of with a backhand comment deploring it. To this day left-wing professors rate President Polk as one of our worst presidents because to do otherwise would be to exalt white people over brown people.

One gets the impression that a leftist like Robert Redford has always been a leftist and the portions of the movie that appeal to men, the action shots with hand-to-hand fighting, the grandeur of the mountains, the rough frontier humor, all are cynically employed to condition us to accept the politically correct message. Certainly that is the case with Dances with Wolves. But, what the hell, I like the movie-I just don't like being manipulated.

I get your meaning and I’ve noticed the same thing in Jeremiah Johnson when viewed in my later years. And, yes, Robert Redford was always a leftist. But you can’t be manipulated when you clearly see the puppeteer’s strings and you do.

When I first saw Jeremiah Johnson in ‘72 the only thing it instilled in me was a desire to live a life of unfettered freedom like those mountain men. Whether that was healthy for me is a question considering what a pipe dream that is in this day.

I shared that desire and, frankly, still do to some extent even as I recognize, as do you, that it is a pipe dream.

There is a remarkable power in a movie like Jeremiah Johnson to engage the spirit and transport us into another reality. When the movie is a typical Jimmy Stewart movie like It's a Wonderful Life, or virtually any John Wayne movie, or early Clint Eastwood movies (such as The Outlaw Josie Wales but not Unforgiven) the effect on society is beneficial because it generally embraces conservative values.

But when the power of cinema is coupled with the strategy of The Frankfurt School, the result is a systematic undermining of our culture which is, of course, the whole idea advanced by the communists of The Frankfurt School. Our own acknowledged resistance to this technique of propaganda is weak considering that we are knowledgeable conservatives and we know we are being manipulated. One can only shudder in contemplation of its effect on the whole of the electorate.

The left has been winning the culture war and one of the reasons is its control of Hollywood with Hollywood's amazing power to define reality, indeed, to reverse reality and make black and white, evil good, abnormal desirable, and the bizarre and foreign normal. It does this for a purpose, to break down our epistemology, to destroy our confidence to know what we believe and why. To substitute "critical thinking" or a universal cynicism that leaves a culture and society valueless and, more importantly, vulnerable to revolution and the imposition of socialism. First they make us confused, then defenseless, then dependent and, ultimately, slaves.

I am sure some readers of these remarks will advise me to get a new tin foil hat but I can only respond, why are we losing elections? Because we are losing the culture. Where we losing the culture? In the cinemas, in the classrooms, in the churches, in the courts, and in the publishing houses. If a movie like Jeremiah Johnson or Dances with Wolves convinces generation after generation that "white people bad, people of color good," the Jesse Jacksons of this world will continue to cost us elections and the Barack Obamas of this world will cost us our liberty.

Culture trumps politics.

I know what you’re saying and I agree with it. I don’t know how to fight it any more than I have been and I’m getting tired of fighting it to be honest. If not for familial and spiritual obligations I might just walk off into the Rockies, come what may, in spite of my age.
