Downplaying a joke he made earlier this year about transgender people, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said Wednesday that he believes voters are more concerned about his thoughts on other issues such as the economy.

The former Arkansas governor, who returned to his home state for a fundraising swing, declined to elaborate on the comments he made during a speech in February to the National Religious Broadcasters Association in Nashville. “Now I wish someone had told me when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE,” Huckabee said in the speech, which was first reported Tuesday by Buzzfeed. “I’m pretty sure I would have found my feminine side and said, `Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.’ You’re laughing because it sounds so ridiculous, doesn’t it?”

I would dispute that. While there used to be more ‘statesmanship’ than there is now, there was always politics, from the beginning. It’s natural and unavoidable.
