A 92-year-old cancer survivor has become the oldest woman to finish a marathon.

Harriette Thompson of Charlotte, North Carolina, ran the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego on Sunday with a 7 hour, 24 minute and 36 second unofficial race time.

"I have no idea if I'm going to be able to do it, but I'm going to try," Thompson said at a news conference on Friday prior to her race.

Good for Harriet. The friends she meets, the fun and supportive contacts make it worth her time and effort.
Better than looking out from a lonely penthouse window, down on the rest of the world.

She’s 36 - only LOOKS 92 after all that running. Have a doughnut.

There was a very successful French middle distance runner in the 60’s, Michel Jazy..he won a few Olympic medals..he smoked 3 packs of Gauloises everyday, and drank two bottle of wine with dinner..

Sounds like my old pa. In the early 1920s, my dad, a farm boy from Eastern
Ontario, got a job in Detroit, painting cars at the River Rouge plant. They used lead paint and no masks. He found the paint fumes to be hard on his throat. His coworker, an older man, suggested that he start smoking, to ease his throat.

Dad started smoking unfiltered ciggies and he didn’t notice the irritation anymore. He smoked a pack and a half a day until the day he died. It finally killed him, almost sixty years later!

That time of 7 hour, 24 minute and 36 second seems hard to believe! I would have guessed it would have been much higher....

Is this right.... if so, the woman had a blistering pace and according to this page, it`s a world record for women over 90 that totally smashes the previous record of 8 hours and 53 minutes.... http://www.arrs.net/SA_Mara.htm. So a big deal was made of the fact that she`s a cancer survivor but not that she shattered the world record for women over 90... something seems a bit off here. The world record for men over age 90 is 6 hours and 2 minutes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fauja_Singh
