Soccer players applauding the fans: does that look more than a little gay? [vanity]
foreverfree's curiosity | 5/23/15 | foreverfree

Posted on 05/23/2015 5:11:00 AM PDT by foreverfree

I posted this question in another thread but got no response so...

Who else has been watching the Barclays Premier League for the last 5 years on "the networks of NBC Universal" (and before that, ESPN)?

Anyone else notice that when a player comes off for a sub (or after the game), they applaud their team's fans? Who besides me thinks that looks a little gay?

I'm considering stopping watching soccer for that reason (although I'll watch Newcastle try to stave off relegation tomorrow [only recently did I tire of the returned applause gesture (just a wave will do IMO)]).

Its a children’s game where men run around in silk shorts and fall down and cry if they get bumped by another player. It’s hard to make that more gay.

Nothing wrong with appreciating the fans. After all, the teams wouldn’t exist without them.

It was Polish American day at Comerica park yesterday. That’s no less “gay”.

There’s plenty of good reasons to stop watching soccer. You don’t need to invoke this one.

Some sports are Thug Sports.
Some sports are Gay Sports.

I’m not sure what sports are considered acceptable these days.

Is the point of this so that you can call something “gay”? Sure seems like it.

I played baseball, football, did track, and boxed, but love soccer. It's a sport, like any other, and has great athletes. The players routinely run 6.5-7.5 miles per game - much of it sprinting, have no time outs, get cleated probably more than in any other sport, and not infrequently there are significant injuries - including broken bones, torn ACls, and concussions. I understand if people don't like it, but it's a tough sport.

I don’t care for soccer but don’t see the point in complaining about them showing appreciation for their fans.

It was Polish American day at Comerica park yesterday. That’s no less “gay”.

Speaking of baseball and "gay" in the same breath, there has been at least one "Gay Day" promotion that I know of in Philadelphia a number of years ago. There were probably more at various major league or minor league ballparks in recent years, but I don't know the specific details.

Last year, the cowardly Chicago Cubs management (which I believe includes an openly lesbian part-owner) agreed to change the date of scheduled Sunday afternoon game so not to conflict with a "Gay Pride parade" in the vicinity of Wrigley Field (which the Cubs have owned and played at for close to 100 years)!

The left has pretty much controlled ownership of Major League Baseball (and the National Football League and the National Basketball Association) for decades, so things like this are the natural results.

Read the OP. He was WATCHING soccer.

Read my post. I did say that it was a game. Although I didn’t say it in my post, I will say now that it is great exercise.

Well, I guess then that it's safe for FReepers to like soccer. If so, I change my mind about dissing footy.

It's just that I never see North American big four sport players clap back. When was the last time you saw a baseball player (home team) hit a gargantuan HR, then in his curtain call return the applause rather than tip his cap? Have you ever seen a basketball player return applause?

My apologies for stirring the pot. May the best team of Newcastle or Hull survive tomorrow, and may the best team of Norwich or Boro go up on Monday (the promotion playoff at Wembley).

Meantime there's Psalm 47:1 O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

ff

P.S. Better to get and give the claps than get the clap, huh? :)
