Life in post-WW2 Italy is a difficult one for a working man. Jobs are scarce, and only a handful of men even get considered for most positions. Antonio Ricci is one of the lucky ones this day. He lands a job delivering handbills, with the only requirement being that he have a bicycle to make all of his stops in the city.

Joy quickly turns to fear, however, when a local thief steals Antonio's bike on the eve of his new job. Fearful of losing his job, and panicked at the thought of not being able to provide for his family, he seeks out the advice of a mystic and launches into a series of ever more desperate efforts to catch the thief and recover his bicycle before all is lost...

In Italian with English subtitles.

Excellent film, if heart-wrenching. 8/10.

BTW, if the story reminds you at all of Pee Wee's Big Adventure, it should. The Bicycle Thief was Burton's inspiration for Pee-Wee, although BT is not in any way a comedy. Quite the opposite.

There’s a sub-culture movie underground, sorta, anyway they did a movie titled “The Icicle Thief” a play on the Bicycle Thief film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097702/

There is a bizarre, modern parody comedy of The Bicycle Thief called The Icicle Thief (1989).

Very surreal and comic, if you enjoy Italian parody. It has a 7.1 rating at IMDb.
