Though sometimes you just can’t wait to rip the tags off that new shirt and wear it out for the world to see, you also may’ve had that moment of, “I should probably wash this before I wear it… oh well.” So how important is it to to give your new duds a dunk in the washing machine before it comes in contact with your skin?

The short answer: Pretty important if you don’t like itchy, scaly, red rashes. Due to varying laws from country to country on the allowable levels of chemicals in fabric, your clothing could be hopping around the globe carrying various substances that might irritate your skin, reports the Wall Street Journal.

I always wash new clothes. You never know what disease that 7-year-old Chinese kid has.

It’s real important to wash my “shrink to fit” Levi’s.

In 30 years of buying clothing I’ve never had a problem trying on garments at the store, bringing them home and wearing them. Not a single rash. Not a single F#@# given.

Sick of living in a fear society...people need to stop obsessing about stupid crap like this unless you have specific allergies or endocrine problems.

On the other hand, I’ve broken out twice neck to ankles when I wore clothing without washing that were made in china. So I wash them first now. Not fearful just wiser.

I have broken out neck to ankles in freshly washed clothes but it was the fault of the detergent. I don't use Wisk anymore.

As a sportswear wholesaler, I’d urge you to continue that practice.
On a side note, a stain is much easier to get out if the garment has had a prior washing.

If you are a guy probably not so much . If you are a gal you would be nuts not to. Ever go shopping with your significant other and see how many clothes are returned “unworn” by the fairer sex? I really think it is a female ritual to buy and subsequently return 80% of what they bought two weeks previously

I see you made it out of the store OK with the shirts. If those plastic things were in front you could pretend it was a brooch or something.

My friend wore a new pair of stretchy made-in-China pull-on pants . Her legs got a bad rash that took a couple of weeks to totally disappear.

We decided it was the formaldehyde!

I always wash newly purchased clothes before wearing them. They often have a smell that is very noticeable and off-putting to me.
The worst I ever encountered was a pair of black jeans from one of those “overpriced & for more mature ladies” boutique stores that had a burning, almost sulfuric smell, truly nasty and grew even worse when combined with normal body heat! It took more than 10 washes and extra doses of fabric softener and vinegar rinses for it to go away enough that they could be worn. I probably should have just returned them, but they were a gift.

I order t-shirts that smell like glue when new. They are very nice pima cotton and I wear them with the glue smell. They are for the gym so hey, at least it’s not b.o. They don’t make me itch.

I’m with you. Sometimes the best wear is the first wear.

Besides that .. they actually stink to high heaven.

I always wash everything new - always.

And .. if it’s not washable (which is rare), then I have it dry cleaned at a place I trust.
