Man Busts Window to Help Dog, Gets Arrested Anyway
Life With Dogs ^ | May 12, 2015 | Fred

A man from Athens, Georgia saved a dog from overheating in a hot vehicle. Most of the time, when people try to help out a dog locked in a car, they’re seen as heroes. However this time, Michael Hammons isn’t facing a hero’s welcome, but is facing criminal charges for his efforts.

According to Hammons, he decided to bust out the car window because, “I heard someone say there was a dog in distress in a hot car.”

Hammons says he didn’t really think about it. When the Desert Storm vet heard someone needed help, he jumped to action almost immediately. Someone actually did call the police already, but Hammons was apparently not made aware of that.

An eyewitness was quoted as saying, “He says we can’t let this dog die, and he starts smashing windows.”

Hammons had grabbed one of the legs off of his wife’s wheelchair, and took it to the window of the vehicle. He did manage to free the dog, but wasn’t exactly greeted warmly by arriving police officers, and the owner of the vehicle wasn’t thrilled about his actions either.

You mean the owner of the car (and dog)? She's the only female involved (other than the vet's wife).

if the facts are correct and the dog was in distress, then this guy deserves a medal not a citation, imho.

(naturally we don’t want people to go busting windows indiscriminately, I get that. but there is such a thing as discretion in the performance of public duty, whether patrol police or local prosecutor. I hope to hear this charge is withdrawn, dismissed soon)

I think it’sso doubtful that a jury would convict this man. The complainant will also look pretty bad.

This stupid “save a dog from a hot car” movement is all about getting permission to smash someone else’s property and being celebrated for it. Morons will look for any excuse to do it. “Look at me, I’m a hero”, and in reality, they’re simply a vandal.

The correct response is to call animal control or the local constabulary. A car’s interior can go well beyond one hundred degrees very quickly. Dogs have limited ability to cool themselves and they can and do die quickly from heat stroke.

Heck, little kids die when left in hot cars; in too many instances. If only someone was around to break out the car window in those cases.

If I ever go brain dead and leave one of my dogs in the truck on a hot day, I sure hope some one is around to commit a little vandalism.
The window, or windows I can repair. If one of my boys or girls were to die I would feel guilty for the rest of my life.
All my dogs expect me to take care of them, and they EARN it.
