A vibrant, multi-hued painting from Pablo Picasso set a world record for artwork at auction, selling for $179 million in New York on Monday night.
"Women of Algiers (Version O)" was part of a sale at Christie's auction house that also featured Alberto Giacometti's life-size sculpture "Pointing Man," which was poised to set a record as the most expensive sculpture sold at auction. They were among two dozen masterpieces from the 20th century Christie's offered in a curated sale titled "Looking Forward to the Past."
The Picasso price included the auction house's premium.
Experts say the prices are driven by artworks' investment value and by wealthy new and established collectors seeking out the very best works.
"I don't really see an end to it, unless interest rates drop sharply, which I don't see happening in the near future," Manhattan dealer Richard Feigen said.

That's about $5,000,000 in 1913.
"I'll give you 1.5 million for it. I mean it's going to sit around my shop for who knows how long. I'm going to put a price of $179 million on it, but I'll probably take the first $2 million offer I get, then I have to pay commission. It takes money to run a pawn shop and keep the lights on you know. ..... My last offer... I'll give you $25 million for it and not a penny more. ..."
PT Barnum would love it.
I am of the same opinion.

Paintings are used as one means to launder drug money.
Yes, that is a ton of money for a painting. It’s ugly, too.
Rich people make poor decisions. Arte Moreno of the Angels baseball team spent $240 million on Albert Pujols who is hitting .230. Moreno also spent $125 million on Josh Hamilton who hit .263 in 89 games last year; he is not playing this year.
The Getty museum purchased Van Gogh’s Irises for $54 million in 1987. That is a beautiful painting.
I’ve seen paintings by elephants that were better than that!
179 million for T&A, I can better free on the interwebs.
So ugly, like just about anything that issues forth from the minds of self identified Communists.
There is, without question, a market for this. Who cares is you think it’s ugly.
I just find it curious that a person believes a painting is worth $179 million. My question to them would be “why”?
179 million for something that is Going to burn someday when God remakes the elements....what a waste of money!
A pciasso for free vs this guy’s work...I’ll take “van dyke brown”’s work for free. It’s more accessible and it won’t be a thief magnet!
