Americans Not In The Labor Force Rise To Record 93,194,000

In what was an "unambiguously" unpleasant April jobs payrolls report, with a March revision dragging that month's job gain to the lowest level since June of 2012, the fact that the number of Americans not in the labor force rose once again, this time to 93,194K from 93,175K, with the result being a participation rate of 69.45 or just above the lowest percentage since 1977, will merely catalyze even more upside to the so called "market" which continues to reflect nothing but central bank liquidity, and thus - the accelerating deterioration of the broader economy.

Can someone explain this to me: How can we possibly have an unemployment rate of 5.4% when 1/3rd of the entire population of the country is unemployed?

If only we try harder, we can reach the goal of 100% in the non labor force. /sar

The headline unemployment rate is really unemployment claims. If everyone is out of already out of work - no claims, low rate.

Democrats lie. Democrats have always lied. Democrats will always lie.

FDR did the same things in 1933 when the depression economy was turning around. His policies and his lies sent the economy back down the crapper and made it worse and longer.

Our unemployment among American citizens is at depression level as employers large and small and big investors celebrate the stock market; all the while employing illegals, H1Bs, L1s, and shipping jobs overseas. It is no wonder that the Chamber of Commerce is all in for Obama, the democrats, and their RINO supporters.

the “unemployment rate” quoted is a completely specious number, made up by working backward from the desired result, then using the Von Nagel theorem (commonly called the “finagle factor”) to magically transform the raw data into the desired outcome.

This involves several manipulations of mathematics, some pixie dust, wishful thinking, and good old-fashioned fraud but - voila! - the right answer appears, and of course the architect of this house of cards comes out looking good - for the moment.

Once one is out of work long enough to exhaust unemployment benefits, moves to Social Security Disability (as many have) or simply gives up, they don’t count as unemployed any longer. That is how Obama gets to a 5.4%.

OK I get it, so they are going by unemployment claims. Pretty ridiculous being that they only pay out for a year and some don’t even qualify.

Wonder where zerohedge got the 93,194,000 number from - when BLS.gov (direct link you posted) has it as 93,712,000?

If we can get this new Free Trade Deal through and Amnesty, we should be able to get that Participation Rate down to 50%. Which in theory will boost the number of households on unemployment, welfare and food stamps, which is Great Stimulus for the Economy according to Nancy Pelosi.

And I bet he’s walking around bragging about that number as well. “We’ve got unemployment the lowest it’s ever been in 40 years!” when in reality the number of people unemployed are 6 times the amount that were unemployed during the Great depression. I remember reading 15 million were unemployed back then. Today we got 6 times that amount at 90 million and I’m pretty certain the population hasn’t increased 6 fold since the 1930s..

No it hasn’t. 1930 the population was 120 million. Today it’s 320 million. So the population has tripled yet the unemployed have risen to 6 times the amount of the depression. This is incredible. We are living in times WORSE than the Great depression when it comes to employment.

Since we all know the economy is not in recovery, but likely it is in a depression, we may wonder “where are the soup lines?”

The answer is that we have 47M people using EBT cards. That is one heck of a long soup line!

Liberals have been an absolute disaster to this country. I was just writing on another post we got 93 million unemployed today while 15 million were unemployed during the Great depression. The population back in the 1930s was around 120 million while today we got 320 million. So while the population has tripled, the amount of unemployed has basically risen 6 times!!! This is 6 times worse than the Great depression!!

We got more problems then just the numbers.....here's a guy commenting about hiring that's pretty revealing...

.....”I work for an American Fortune 50 ‘technical’ company. As a side responsibility, I review resumes and am part of the interviewing process. We hire ‘few’ American college graduates.... Sure, we'd LOVE to hire a lot but we cannot. What are we seeing?

..... The resume padding has grown to the point of insane absurdity. That is called lying. The reading and writing skills are high school level. Comprehension is low. Work ethic is absent. Demands and entitlement sentiment is off the chart. And these are Masters Degree applicants in some cases...... One wonders how most all of them got out of grade school.

So, ‘we hire more foreign workers’ who have far greater skills and capabilities and can generally read and write English better than US graduates”.....

Wow that’s exactly what it is isn’t it. Back then there was no EBT cards and I believe no welfare either, so they literally had to stand in soup lines. We don’t see that today because it’s all done electronically out of the public eye. This is an absolute disaster this economy. 93 million unemployed right now. 15 million were unemployed during the Great depression even though the countries population was 120 million. So while today the population has tripled to 320 million, the unemployed on the other hand has utterly skyrocketed to 6 times the amount that were unemployed during the Great depression.

Can anyone tell me if this is 93 million out of the total population (including children and elderly) or 93 million out of those of working age?
