Raleigh, N.C. Attorneys for a Raleigh police officer began making the case Monday that he should be compensated the burns, blisters and emotional damage he suffered when a hot cup of coffee spilled on his lap in January 2012.
In the morning, a judge heard motions from representatives of Matthew Kohr, a lieutenant with Raleigh police's special operations division, and Starbucks.

I’d offer him a $20 gift certificate and if he wants to play this game out in some court....go for it.

Screw ‘em.
You’re a BIG BOY now; if you can’t handle your coffee, you SHOULDN’T be allowed to have any.
...”emotional damage”... what a CROCK.
People have been drinking and spilling hot coffee for ages. What makes this guy any different or special?
Hey idiot officer, coffee his hot.
What, did you buy ICED coffee originally or something?
Sheesh.
The government will be spending millions of dollars to study why is coffee hot, ice is cold and water is wet.
So this goobermint employee goes into Starbucks - where he knows he won’t have to pay for anything - because cops don’t hardly ever pay for coffee or self service sodas - spills the free coffee in his lap, and then wants to sue the entity that GAVE him the coffee?
What a jerk. Yeah, I know, on his lap? Must have been very painful. Must cause some marital issues. I can only imagine - but it ain’t starbucks fault.
Actually, he didn't buy anything...it was given to him!
In the lawsuit, Kohr said he poured cold water on the burn, but the pain intensified. He claimed the injuries aggravated his Crohn's disease and resulted in surgery to remove a portion of his intestine. The incident, according to the lawsuit, also caused Kohr's wife, Melanie, a loss of a "source of emotional support, her social companion and her intimate partner."
This is the type of money-grubbing, something-for-nothing wimp that the Raleigh special operations division hires and promotes to lieutenant? The force should be ashamed of itself. Not only should he lose the case, he should be fired.
Assault coffee?
How sinister!
I can’t wait to see if his attorneys argue that since he didn’t pay for the coffee, that Starbucks forced it on him?
What a crock. The guy sounds like he smells money.
you can’t fire any goobermint employee......
He didn’t get a free donut with the coffee? Sue them!
That will be interesting to see.
yep, as Raleigh native, I’m a tad ashamed....
I’d honestly expect this sort of thing up my way here in NY state.
Is the guy a transplant and is there a way to find out if he imported this idiocy into NC from -say- my area?
