Don’t know the man but isn’t it crazy how now anything before 90 sounds like a young death? Mom’s 83 and drive from Staten Island to Long Island and Atlantic City :)

If I remember correctly, whenever he made a good shot and got applause, he'd take off his hat and acknowledge the crowd.

He always struck me as a class act. RIP, Mr. Peete.

It’s better to have been Calvin Pete than Tiger Woods. No doubt. He got friends the old fashioned way, he earned them.

GOLF

Calvin Peete was born in Detroit, Michigan. He played on the 1983 and 1985 U.S. Ryder Cup teams. He won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average in 1984. He was in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking for several weeks when they debuted in 1986.

Peete did not begin playing golf until he was in his 20s, but immediately excelled at a game most pros learn as young children. He learned the game while peddling goods to migrant workers in Rochester, New York, playing on the public course at Genesee Valley Park. Growing up poor, Peete suffered a badly broken arm that was never properly set.

He was the leader in driving accuracy on the PGA Tour for 10 straight years, 1981–90.

Well, it sounds like a young death because he wasn’t much older than me, and I ain’t old!

Wonderful man and role model who overcame so many obstacles on the PGA tour. He and Charlie Sifford showed how to quietly be pioneers. RIP.

The obit below refers to his arm, broken at an early age and never set properly. When we joined his gallery at the Houston Open many years ago, I found it fascinating to watch how smooth the man’s swing was, considering he couldn’t straighten his left arm. Power and accuracy.

There should be a movie about this great man. An unbelievable triumph above abject poverty. Plus, he had Tourette’s Syndrome.

I worshipped this man. R.I.P.
