He was probably trying to impress is girlfriend with his bravado and derring-do. The snake was found in her backyard (minding it’s own business).
the sad part is that people like him reproduce.

Years ago my friend, Brian was at a park on lake Houston.
Well he saw a pigmy rattler. So he caught it and put it in his tackle box. A lot of beer was involved. And he had to show it off.
Well he got bit and really freaked out. Paramedics came out and he was fighting with them. They strapped him to the gurney and took him to the closest hospital.
Well the ER folks unstrapped him and he started fighting with them. They refused to treat him. The paramedics strapped him down again and took him way across town to Ben Taub. He was in the hospital a long long time.
