A St. Tammany Sheriff's Office reserve deputy was stripped of his commission and arrested Saturday night (April 11) after authorities said he drunkenly stole a department patrol boat and crashed it into a piling outside a riverfront bar-restaurant in Madisonville.

Danny Eckhart was not acting in any official capacity when he boarded a patrol boat docked on the Tchefuncte River and drove it downriver to the popular T Rivers Bar and Grill, St. Tammany sheriff's spokesman Capt. George Bonnett said Sunday. As Eckhart piloted the boat, Bonnett said he caused damage of an unknown amount to the craft when he ran it into a piling near the bar's docking area just before midnight. No one was injured in the crash, Bonnett said.

Eckhart's blood alcohol content at the time of his arrest was not disclosed.

That high, huh?

So a Louisiana reserve sheriff gets drunk, crashes a boat, and he gets fired. An Oklahoma reserve sheriff mistakes his pistol for his taser, shoots and kills a suspect, and he gets off scott free. Is there something wrong with this picture?

I don’t know who the genius was who decided to give a gun, taser, and shield to a 73 year old guy.

I used to live on a tidal creek in South Jersey. Every summer the drunks crashed their boats on the weekends. There were three Philly cops who bought a 32 foot Jersey boat and the first time they took it out they got drunk and coming back to the marina crashed it on the bulk head. The marina owner and me pulled the boat into a slip and pulled out it with a travel lift. These three cops were complete idiots when it came to boating.

The police department classified it as "excusable homicide" and he still has his badge. So the odds of him being convicted are pretty slim.
