The kids already get up to 3 free meals at school. At home, how much does a cup of rice, a can of beans, a chicken thigh and some seasonings cost?
I had all the ham I could eat for Easter, and ham for breakfast a couple of times, and the bone and scraps have come in split pea soup, and some has been used in fried rice, and I have absolutely no idea how much is divided in meal portions and waiting in the freezer.
That girl simply does not waste food.

We both come from those sorts of roots. People used to know how to live well, and without the government, on very little income.

I have unpleasant memories of eating turkey sandwiches for weeks after thanksgiving for my school lunch and ham sandwiches weeks after Easter. My mom wasn’t a creative cold lunch builder but she was definitely someone who could feed us for under $4 a day.

On the dried potato isle at Walmart there is a small milk carton looking container, top shelf, that contains dried hash browns. Just add hot water and you will get 6 servings of has browns.
Cost per container...$1.25. That and two eggs, and I am in hog heaven.
Of course, YOU have to cook them.
Add a few goats to the mix...and they might live a bit longer...

Figure $4 a day comes out to $120 a month. A smart grocery shopper should have no problem surviving on $4 a day.

Don’t dump that city trash on us.
The cities created the problem they can keep the problem.
Their idea of survival will be robbing and stealing from everyone around them.
My dad defined eternity as two persons and a ham.
I have had some superb meals ‘out’, but my Scottish DNA prevents me from touching my wallet.
Also had some where most of the price must have been used for overhead and presentation.
One of the best was a Polish wedding at the local firehouse;not certain what it was, but an outstanding meal!
It was great, but I admit I'm happy the rest is in the freezer to wait for another day.
Normally, the boy would have put a big dent in it, but his school and work schedule have been really crazy lately. He hasn't done his share on the ham, LOL!
Agreed ....Once I had to completely start life over and though I was very careful there would be several days at the end of the month where I ran out of money.
So the first thing I would buy was a bag of rice which was hidden in a box under the bed.
It is amazing how good, plain old rice is when you are very hungry.

I saw a six pack of those at our Costco recently. I was tempted to buy them, any good?
Good choice. I stood behind a young (healthy) man getting an 85 cent candy bar with his food stamp card. Your oatmeal would have been a better selection.
I remember when the govt gave free peanut butter as a protein supplement. People sold their five-pound unmarked cans. It was thick and dry but tasty enough.
