Singer-songwriter Don McLean's original manuscript and notes to "American Pie" sold at auction Tuesday for $1.2 million.
McLean offered his wistful anthem that asks "Do you recall what was revealed the day the music died?" at Christie's.
The auction house said two people vied for the 16-page manuscript, one in the room and one on the phone. The winning bid went to the collector in the room who wished to remain anonymous.

Went on my first date with my wife to see Three Dog Night and heard Mclean’s song as he was the warm up act. Always be special to me.
The first time I heard it I was sitting in the car just getting ready to go into a store. It was so interesting that I just sat there the entire 9 minutes and knew immediately that it was going to be a hit.
A bunch of the words had meaning to me tho I learned later that I was not quite right on some of them. For instance, as soon as I heard the words “the Jester”, I thought it was about Mick Jagger.
OK song but I got sick of it because the radio stations played it to death (yes there was a time you listened to the radio for music).
As far as paying a hundredth of that amount for the music - absolutely no.
IIRC, McLean is the man who inspired “Killing Me Softly With His Song”. I think the specific song of his that moved the listener was “Empty Chairs”.
For me it is the song that represents the ‘70s. It was in rotation for pretty much the whole decade it seemed. I did not mind then and have warm memories of it still.
It was the anthem of my early high school days when I WAS a lonely teenage broncin’ buck without the pink carnation and a pickup truck that was actually a ‘65 Chevy Biscayne I borrowed from my brother.
“School’s Out” was ours’.
You have a few years on me. I was born in ‘61, but grew up on the streets of Jax with little competent adult supervision. Knew more than I should have in ‘72 when this song came out, but just the same it is woven into the fabric of those days and the fabric of my life.
Yeah, it sure strikes a nostalgic chord with me, and I’m not much of a sentimentalist.
Some 35 years later some of the lines from that song still play in my head.
We saw McLean (& pics w/him) a month 1/2 ago & 3 Dog Night 2 1/2 wks ago.
