I spent a long time on the phone last night with a law professor at one of the country’s elite law schools. This professor is a practicing Christian, deeply closeted in the workplace; he is convinced that if his colleagues in academia knew of his faith, they would make it very hard for him. We made contact initially by e-mail — he is a reader of this blog — and last night, by phone. He agreed to speak with me about the Indiana situation on condition that I not identify him by name or by institution. I do know his identity, and when he tells me that he is “well-informed about the academy and the Supreme Court,” I assure you that from where he sits, and teaches, and from his CV, he is telling the truth.
I will call him Prof. Kingsfield, after the law professor in The Paper Chase.
What prompted his reaching out to me? “I’m very worried,” he said, of events of the last week. “The constituency for religious liberty just isn’t there anymore.”
Like me, what unnerved Prof. Kingsfield is not so much the details of the Indiana law, but the way the overculture treated the law. “When a perfectly decent, pro-gay marriage religious liberty scholar like Doug Laycock, who is one of the best in the country — when what he says is distorted, you know how crazy it is.”
“Alasdair Macintyre is right,” he said. “It’s like a nuclear bomb went off, but in slow motion.” What he meant by this is that our culture has lost the ability to reason together, because too many of us want and believe radically incompatible things.

Such a culture will collapse. It's suicidal--- and that's the good news. Because it will reap the natural and logical consequences of its apostasy and folly.
But we must preserve our children and grandchildren. We must preserve a remnant-- a remnant that can rebuild in the spaces cleared out by the collapse of America.

For every problem, every roadblock, every attack there is a defense. The response for Christians should be straightforward, that if they cannot offer goods and services of some types to the general public, then do not do so, only offer such goods and services to fellow Christians.
Churches have far more immunity to such attacks than do individual people, so arrangements should be made for individuals to make contractual arrangements with churches so they are far less exposed to attack.
The example of the baker is a good one. Most of what they bake does not impact on their faith, one way or another, so they are free to sell to everyone, saints and sinners alike.
However, they make wedding cakes as well. As such, they should no longer offer wedding cakes to the general public, but only by contract to say a dozen churches that do not marry homosexuals. And it is an exclusive contract, which forbids them from making wedding cakes for weddings outside of that group of a dozen churches.
Homosexuals cannot force churches to marry them, at least yet, and perhaps not for many decades if ever. So if a church agrees to marry a couple, then the baker can feel free to make them a wedding cake. But if someone walks off the street and tries to order a wedding cake, they can refuse.
They do not have to say they are refusing on religious grounds, but contractual grounds. This clearly avoids any problem of pro-homosexual laws.
As “collateral damage”, they also do not and cannot offer cakes for secular marriages, either.
In any event, by this means they do not expose themselves to attacks and lawsuits. They are *insulated*.

Yes we have not experienced real persecution yet here but we will. Will Christians be unable to get jobs, buy and sell, will we have to hide to worship God? Could the beginning of this be our “intolerance” to the perverse lifestyles and the legal and political backlash from that? We will get to choose God and His word or the easy wide road?

Did you not read the article? Raw power recognizes no "immunities" anymore. You are relying on structures of 20 years ago that are no longer recognized by the cultural elites as valid.
We are on the verge of seeing churches closed because they will not accept the new Leftist doctrine. How is a church going to help a business?
