Thousands of temporary workers due to be sent home Wednesday (Canada)

The deadline for temporary foreign workers to either become permanent residents or leave the country arrived Wednesday, leaving thousands of would-be Canadians scrambling. In 2001, the Conservatives set a deadline of April 1, 2015, for temporary foreign workers in low-skilled jobs who have been in Canada for more than four years to leave. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says that leaves thousands of potential Canadians in jeopardy of deportation as their permanent residency applications are yet to be fully processed. The CFIB is calling for a faster track to residency for foreign workers in low-skilled jobs. "CFIB commended the federal government for its decision to allow hundreds of skilled TFWs to continue to live and work in Canada until their application for permanent residency is complete," Richard Truscott, CFIB's vice-president for Alberta and B.C., said in a press release. "Unfortunately, thousands of TFWs in other provinces and those with more junior skill sets in Alberta will still be forced out." Western Canada is expected to be hard hit by the move. B.C. NDP MP Jinny Sims said in the House of Commons Tuesday that the deadline has left foreign workers desperate and vulnerable to predatory and fraudulent consultants. "The Conservatives have made a complete mess of the temporary foreign worker program, leaving vulnerable workers paying the price," she said. "The Conservatives ignored all the warnings that their deadline was going to have unintended consequences, and now some consultants have taken advantage of desperate temporary foreign workers, bilking them of all their life savings while making false promises." Immigration Minister Chris Alexander retorted: "Our temporary foreign worker program is working. It is putting Canadians first."

I'm wondering how the Conservatives managed to set the deadline while the Liberals were in power.

To all- please ping me to Canadian topics.

Canada Ping!

Rest assured that these people are being advised by the same groups advising our “dreamers”.

I was wondering the same thing myself. If Harper took over from the children Feb 6/06, who set the deadline in ‘01? This story is dated Apr. 1/15 and I haven’t seen a correction or a complaint. Maybe an April Fool’s joke?

Maybe but no indication of such. I’ve noticed a lot of liberal bias creeping into Sun Media reporting over the past decade or so; here’s hoping the new owners at Postmedia put a stop to it, or at least hire a few fact-checkers.
