Most of the major characters in “Casino” were accurately based on real people. Joe Peschi played Tony Spilotro. Robert DeNiro played Lefty Rosenthal. Did Dick Smothers accurately play the role of Harry Reid? It would not surprise me.

The contentious gaming commission hearing in which Rothstein was denied his gaming license did have a real-life equivalent with Rosenthal getting combative with gaming commissioners. Fun fact: Chairman of the gaming commission at the time? Now-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Although he died in 2008, Frank Rosenthal (Rothstein of Casino—the Robert DeNiro character) had a geat website which is still active.

The weirdest thing about Frank Rosenthal is that despite his name he was born a gentile of Swedish descent who was adopted by a Jewish couple in Chicago. From them he took his last name.
