A local radio legend has passed away.

John Ed Willoughby died this morning after a long illness.

Willoughby’s career spanned parts of five decades. He got started in radio as Tommy Charles' sidekick on Birmingham's WSGN-AM in 1975.

He "retired" 30 years later but continued to host a Saturday morning sport talk show with Doug Layton until 2012. He retired then due to health issues.

Willoughby was 80 years old.

A funeral will take place 11 a.m. Saturday at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.

RIP John Ed Boy (his character with Tommy Charles in their daily spoof the Walton’s: The Willoughby’s of Willoughby Mountain).

He was a funny guy. I used to see him out and about when I worked in Birmingham.
