Birdman is self-involved Hollywood narcissism. I like a lot of the stuff about what's going on in an insane person's mind. That was unfortunately overshadowed by the writers and directors making it all about how special stars are, even has beens.

There are much better movies about aging people in physical and mental decline. St. Vincent that came out at about the same time is an example.

Do you think the filmmakers weren't aware of the narcissism in their profession?

I haven't seen the movie, but from what people are saying it sounds like Fellini, who had to have been aware of how grating his characters were, but still produced some great films.
