Life hacks, auto hacks, relationship hacks, computer hacks: the world seems full of hacks. But how many really pan out? Here are some from the car world. Most actually work, but others should be avoided unless you want to be taken for a fool.

I once used a IUD for a carburetor return spring
(I like this one)
Peeing in your vehicles DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) tank can keep you going.
False. If youre driving a late-model diesel-powered truck, youre probably familiar with the need to keep the DEF tank filled. These cleaner burning engines have an emission control system that will prevent the engine from starting if this tank is empty. The active ingredient in DEF is urea and this is injected into the exhaust stream to aid in reducing emissions. Most DEF fluid contains around 32% urea, whereas human urine has only 2 to 3%. The sensors in the vehicle would quickly determine you were trying to pull a fast one if you relieved yourself in the DEF tank nozzle.
Ping.
At one point in time that (diesel exhaust fluid) would have sounded like high compression curb feelers
Before I retired and we were running some of the 2007 spec engines in our lab, everybody called it “cow piss”
I once used a IUD for a carburetor return spring
Well, that’s got to be better than using
a carburetor return spring for an IUD.
The guy next door to us does his own repairs and in 10 years he’s gone through about 20 cars ,he buys junk to start with ,but his repairs the cars to death . He works for a Courier company,I try to pull over when I see him on the road
We then drove to Autozone in my car and got the correct belt, which I showed him how to install and properly tighten.
Pantyhose saved me many times in older cars, might not work as well in modern ones. However when my wife found a pair in my glove compartment, the explanation about belt replacemant saved my life even in the modern car.
Works well enough for an alternator belt going solely between 2 points.
Homer Simpson reads playboy:
“Our unabashed dictionary defines IUD as ‘Love Springs Internal’.....I don’t get it”
Holding a remote key fob against your head can extend its range.
True. This one actually works and has some solid science behind it. When the transmitters waves pass through your head, the liquid inside your skull will change the signals wavelength and can noticeably extend the operating range.
Stupidest thing I ever heard.
Water is one hell of an impediment to transmitting waves.
Worse than a brick wall actually.
Does repairing a car in pantyhose count? It was a dark and stormy night after a few beers...
Years ago my brothers fan belt broke on an old VW.
He ripped the band off his tighty-whiteies to get home.
Yes !
If it was a craft beer........
Alas, Iron City.
When I was a kid, we used 7-Up in the radiator after the car overheated.
I also know someone who rigged a baseball bat as a handle to manually work the wipers.
I helped my father in law make a carb gasket out of a Corn Flakes box
