“The Killing Joke” which this storyline is from came out in the late 1980s and was during a move in the industry toward a changing older market with the abandonment of the Comics Code Authority. DC wanted to make the entire Batman genre darker - Frank Miller, Alan Moore, and others did this superbly.
It was a very well done and acclaimed graphic novel at the time because it was so “cutting edge”. The only thing going on here is that someone decided that they needed something to make noise about and went looking. When they thought they found something they made a stink and now they are just stirring the bucket.
Personally the “Killing Joke” is a perfect example of literature representing psychotic evil as it really is in reality instead of the Bam-Pow-Boom pablum the the CCA was issuing forth. There are still comics that do the latter that are acceptable for the younger generation, but now there are also cutting edge stories that have more realistic and thought-provoking stories as well for the older generation.
Much ado about nothing.
Try reading some of the stuff from the 50s prior to the CCA
That's gotta be the understatement of at least the day. They are now nothing but extensively used butt-wipe.
Actually in this case, the death threats were being made against people who objected to the cover, gamergate style.
Excellent
When I first moved to Nashville in 1990 I was puzzled over the number of yard signs people put out with just “Boner” on it.
Found out he was the mayor.
