Self-driving cars will change everything

Self-driving cars.

Delphi, one of the biggest auto parts suppliers in the country, will pilot a self-driving Audi from California to the New York auto show. It's part publicity stunt, part experiment: The vehicle's advanced active safety sensors will collect gigabytes of data about the experience, which Delphi will use to help build parts for autonomous cars of the future. (There will be a driver in the car, on stand-by, in case things go wrong, and to take the wheel when the car crosses into a state that regulates the robots.)

I will believe when I see one of these navigate Midtown Manhattan between 9 am - 6 pm. Would people if they can work while commuting be willing to live even further away from their job? For us older ones the idea of giving up control will take adjustment.

I am driving a rental Ford “Escape” this week, it is a glorified golf cart.

Let’s see them navigate a snow covered street.

Have you seen the Google self-driving car? It makes the Escape look like a Mustang by comparison.

It’s gonna be interesting for insurance companies.

As for me, I’m long past enjoying driving. Jeeves, take me to the store.

In Obamatalk, that’s Boehner, takes me to the sto’.

Will moms be able to put their kids in the car and wave to them as they drive off to school?

That should warm the cockles of every child molester.

Say goodbye to 8 MILLION+ ‘driver jobs’ in the U.S.A. Artificial Intelligence (AI) spells DOOM for the human race.

I wouldn’t mind having the feature for long cross country trips but I want to turn it off for my regular driving. Even using it on the highway I would remain behind the wheel and alert for grabbing control.

I would LOVE to see this- I travel from Buffalo to Boston each week for work- the drive is a killer- but if I could fall asleep and wake when I arrive, I would never travel anywhere by plane again (les than 8 hours drive, at least)

In the 50’s it was flying cars and robot lawnmowers. Wheel-shaped space stations and a lunar colony.

Self-driving cars are a dream of the Nanny State. No speeding, no risk taking, everything tracked and reported, coded in will be rules to alleviate Man-Caused Climate Change and the car won’t start if you have not paid all your taxes and maintained the proper weight.

So you get in and get identified and go where you want or go to jail or get hacked , kidnapped and ransomed. Not to mention the possibilities of getting lost, in a wreck...

And if someone wants you dead, all he has to do is hack into your car, take control, and floor it into a tree.

I heard one of the liberal pundits mention today that this will be mandated as the future standard because our current cars are too dangerous.

It seemed outlandish at first, but I wouldn’t rule out anything.

Take a bus and get a Zipcar when you get there, then you could sleep or work. Buffalo and Boston both have Zipcar.

Let’s see them navigate a road where you come up over a rise and there’s an oncoming corn-harvester with its “prongs” occupying half your lane.

Driverless cars will probably be better drivers than most of the drivers that are on the streets now. They won’t be distracted or emotional
