A round of public furor has centered on Toronto’s Ryerson University after two journalism students were barred from an on-campus meeting because they were not “racialized.”
First-year journalism students Julia Knope and Trevor Hewitt were attempting to attend a meeting hosted by the Racialised Students’ Collective when they were asked to leave by a group organizer.
“She asked them if they had been marginalized or racialized, and when they both responded ‘no,’ that’s when she said the meeting was only for those who felt they had been,” said Anne McNeilly, an associate professor at the Ryerson School of Journalism.
Ms. Knope and Mr. Hewitt, who are both visibly white, had been attempting to attend the gathering as part of a assignment by Ms. McNeilly to sit in on a public meeting.
“It seemed really ironic to me that the meeting was about racialization and they were prohibiting certain people from entering,” said Ms. Knope in comments to the Ryersonian.

Well, by excluding them, I’d say they gave them grounds for inclusion. But maybe I think too much.
They should have said that, no, they hadn’t been marginalized or racialized . . . until that very moment.

Julia, when someone asks if you’ve been racialized, you say “YES”!
Is there something special about being defined by one’s “Blackness”? If so, I am at a severe disadvantage, as I wasn’t sufficiently “melanized” at my conception and birth.

According to that one, being Irish with just such a last name, I should be able to claim grievances for decades of hate directed at the Irish back when.
They should have responded “I haven’t been racialized until today when you exclude me”.
At work today, I met someone who must have been ‘marginalized’. From the clothes and hair, I thought it was a she until it came closer and I saw five o’clock shadow. Then it spoke... in a de baritone. It was called ‘Danielle’ by the supervisor. Fine, PC diversity in the office... Problem is, ‘Danielle’ drives a SCHOOL BUS! I quickly excused myself before I threw up in my mouth.
Canada, once upon a time, more Christian than the US... now, well we need to pray for God’s mercy.

So I can define myself as black if I feel like it. Like people can define their gender. Why not? I feel like a (fill in the blank) today... who are you to say otherwise?
