I’m guessing the white spots are geysers. As they rotate into the dark they stay lit a bit longer than the surrounding material as if they are above the surface.

It leads to questions about what would be heating the interior.

It’s not tidal heating like that found on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. My guess is either solar, or there are some remaining decaying isotopes (no where near the level at any time for a molten core, but enough to heat up the icy layer.

It’s quite amazing when you ponder all of it.

"I want to know what the reflective spots are.
Likely ice, obviously, but it’ll be nice for confirmation."

If it is ice, how does it maintain its brightness as it moves into shadow?

I’m sorry you seem to have mistaken me for one of those conspiracy morons.

You want to take the idea that "Dawn will reach its science mapping orbit in December" (NASA probe closes in on Ceres, sees unusual lights) at face value, be my guest. But I think it's a bit of a stretch to call people who question a government agency's claim to need nine more months from the time they reach orbit to even start taking photos of mysterious lights. So who, really, is the "moron" here?

I would love to see the images from the ISS that ‘they’ have deemed too something or another for us to see. There were some pretty wild videos released in real time, from manned space fights, of things going one direction and then reversing course, before Muslim outreach program started a new policy of no more real time video or images.

My favorite is the snapped tether experiment, STS 75, Feb 1996 (the broken tether was over 11 miles long):

The writer is a moron.

The most recent images received from the spacecraft, taken on March 1, show Ceres as a crescent, mostly in shadow because the spacecraft's trajectory put it on a side of Ceres that faces away from the sun until mid-April. When Dawn emerges from Ceres' dark side, it will deliver ever-sharper images as it spirals to lower orbits around the planet.

NASA Spacecraft Becomes First to Orbit a Dwarf Planet - See more at: http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/feature_stories/Dawn_First_Orbit_Dwarf_Planet.asp#sthash.SwsysbmV.dpuf

The craft is some 38,000 miles from the planet and won't get pictures much better than what we've already seen still it drops into a lower orbit.

Well it would be nice if they release ever-clearer photos of the white spots during the next 9 months before the official mapping photos start up. We’ll see.

as part of it’s Muslim outreach effort Ceres will now be renamed Xerxes.

No pleasing Muslims at any rate, but changing it from a goddess to a Persian ruler won't help as neither is Islamic.

Thanks for that link. I hadn’t seen that one before, but those objects are similar to the ones I was thinking of. PM did an article on those sorts of things and Thomas Jones was interviewed.

“In another of Stubb’s posted clips, a view through the window of a space shuttle shows lights drifting along in space, then reversing direction and darting away with a flash....Thomas Jones, a former shuttle mission specialist and payload commander and co-author of Planetology: Unlocking the Secrets of the Solar System, was on that mission—STS-80, which also took place in 1996—and provided this description of the footage. “A few ice crystals or flakes of thruster residue in the near field are floating by, get hit by a thruster exhaust plume and zip out of the scene.”

http://www.popularmechanics.com/space/a4298/4319637/

He’s referring to the clip I mentioned up thread where objects change course. I suppose all those objects around the tether were ice crystals too. Looked like some of them were changing course, but not as drastically as on the STS 80 mission.

I’ve known a couple of ‘old’ guys (it always starts that way, lol) who put in their time at Edwards, Groom Lake, and NASA, and when I’ve asked them directly about such ‘things’, the answer was in the affirmative with both men. It really intrigues me, especially since I’ve seen too many things in the remote areas of NM and AZ. Yeah, “if you can imagine it, it exists” statement from the former ‘head’ of Skunkworks doesn’t specify HOW such things exist or where they came from.

At the end of the PM article, Jones states “”People see unexplained things, I used to believe UFOs were spaceships—when I was 14.” Lol

Remember that tether was almost twelve miles long. Knowing that, and watching those things pass behind it, gives a petty good idea of how big they are.

Last couple of months or so (sorry, don’t have the link), a male and a female Russian cosmonaut were doing some sort of outside work on the ISS and suddenly the female turned and saw something, apparently very close, that scared her. As she exclaimed and started talking rapid-fire Russian, her male companion - apparently already used to... whatever... was shushing her, literally “shhhh” over and over again until she called down. Later they said it was because the light illuminated the ocean so beautifully that she was suddenly overcome by it (I guess the more ridiculous the excuse, the less that can be said in response).

So yeah, they know. They all know. And they treat everyone else like idiots over it. Like that really is thinking the issue through, right? I mean, what could go wrong?
