” Coaching kids is the best way to keep up with them, get them to trust you, and get to know who your kids friends are.”
Good point.
Not a tough call : )
I’ve seen fathers get into fist fights, screaming at umpires, coaches, etc.
And their kids just stand there red-faced and embarrassed.
Shameful and pathetic behavior from people who should know better.
But - that being said, it was far more rewarding for the other 99% of the time.
I coached girls. If I spoke to them the way MY coaches spoke to me, they would hang me in the town square.
This past year our Lax coach at the high school got in trouble for grabbing the facemask of one of the kids.
I laughed and told my wife that I used to think the facemask bars of my football helmet were “coach handles.”
Times have changed.
“..Times have changed...”
Not for the better.
The moms of the kids I coached used to wince when I went into one of my “salty” speeches to the kids. But hey, the kids loved it. And most of the dads would crack up and laugh.
I gave a speech about attitude every year, and I used the “History of The Middle Finger story” - about English archers who’d had their forefingers cut off by the French... they’d show the Frenchies that they could STILL “Pluck” the bowstring of their Yew bows, hence the REAL term “Pluck Yew” and the gesture with the remaining finger.
That one ALWAYS drew gasps of horror to the parents of new kids who weren’t familiar with me. I’d say “HOLD ON, Moms... just hear me out...!”
I STILL get that brought up to me occasionally, haha!!
Good days, for sure.
This isn’t fair......I can’t even flip you off!
Educatin’ the kids... one of my finer moments, Hahah!!!
YEAH!
..Times have changed...Not for the better.”
It hardly ever does anymore.
