Fox Company is an American infantry unit with a very big problem - its commanding officer. Captain Cooney (Eddie Albert) is incompetent and cowardly, but also protected by powerful politicians back home. Battalion won't move him, and the men endure their weak leadership as best they can. But when Fox is sent into a major battle, Cooney's failures might just be too much for Lieutenant Costa (Jack Palance).

Co-starring Lee Marvin, Richard Jaeckel, and Buddy Ebsen.

Very solid WW2 film. 7.5/10.

BTW, it's interesting to see Eddie Albert play such a craven worm, given that he was a decorated war veteran who won the Bronze Star (with Valor) for his actions at Tarawa.

Also, there's a couple of interesting WW2 film crossovers in this one. Private Bernstein is played by Robert Strauss, who was "Animal" in Stalag 17. And the French blacksmith is played by Louis Mercier, perhaps best remembered as the irrepressible "Frenchy" in the Humphrey Bogart film Sahara.

Agreed, I caught it a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t believe that I had never heard of it before.

Sure thing! I’ll add you right now!

BTW, I usually post the list of previously shown movies. I haven’t done it recently, as I accidentally deleted the list from my computer. I should have it back up by next week. I’ve run across some real gems on youtube.

Yep, great movie! I’m a huge Peckinpah fan, and Cross of Iron is one of his best.

I read several books by German grunts and met a few later, Ost Front types, I was amazed how similar our experiences were.
