How would you survive a long-term disaster situation? I am talking about the worst case scenario gangs of marauders, hungry people fleeing the cities, and/or soldiers storming through neighborhoods with no electricity, no grocery stores, no water, and no heat.
The lead recommendation in this scenario is to bug out to a rural area. Ideally, you would own a self-sustaining property away from the population masses and get there before the chaos begins. Many people will attempt this approach. People from the urban areas will spread out toward the suburbs and ultimately to the rural areas. Those who are fleeing violence in the cities and those that have cabins or strategic property will all be on the same highways at the same time.
You can imagine the traffic jam. Fighting might break out. Cars might be abandoned and permanent roadblocks created. You dont want to be in that mix.

Good stuff but my plan is to LEAVE. Have a line of retreat and the means to get there prepared at all times.
Respectfully suggest other FReepers do the same if possible.
Oh yeah, he did talk about that. Was just emphasizing. Good points in the article for those who don’t bug out early enough or have no line or retreat, too.
I already live in a rural area.
I don’t think my neck of the woods is expecting a large influx of people any time soon.
I also live in a rural area; actually more of a wilderness area, nearest neighbor is over 3 miles away.
Already self sufficient in vegetable gardens, both winter and summer. The orchard started producing about 4 years ago and the livestock is doing well, plus wild game meat.
There are only 2 routes into our area, both with numerous excellent choke points.
We are all heavily armed. I really don’t think we will have much of a problem with the urban or sub urban mobs looking to loot.
Same here.
I quickly scanned/read the article and I didn’t see communications mentioned...at all. It has never been easier to earn your Ham License and entry level radios start around $30.00
When the electric grid goes down, everything stops! No electricity, no refrigeration, no gas pumps working, no natural gas pressure.
When the water towers empty, no pumps to refill, no sewage pumps working, when the cars run out of gas...plugged highways, no trucks bringing food into the cities.
Expect an outbreak of diseases like you have never seen, no drinking water, must drink from the gutter and sewer.
Then things will get really bad when the welfare cards fail to work.
Think of how it will be if all this fails in WINTER or the heat of SUMMER!
People will swelter in the heat making short tempers, and in winter they will then burn anything made of wood to keep warm.
Up and out here....done a while back. I hope FReepers are taking this seriously and getting ready. When the planned 100% dollar crash finally is set into motion it is going to be a nightmare.
Yes all true and within about 6 weeks there will be a major die off. After that the ones who are left will have to manage to get along until things get back to normal. Most of the survivors will be in the rural areas.
Where do you buy these radios and how much does the antennae cost?
When do you think the chaos will start?
our county is the #6 county in the nation for households with guns. It is only reached via a narrow, 4 mile long canyon. I think 90% of the folks plan to report for duty at the mouth of the canyon when the SHTF.
Good thing about SFL is the required hurricane protection for all openings. Pretty tough stuff that corrugated steel bolted to the cement around the windows and doors. And accordions for the big openings like sliding glass doors and giant windows where the panels would be too awkward to handle.
You’ll also notice that these baofengs have collar mikes and earpieces. You can also turn off the display to go completely silent. Most bandits on walkie-talkies will be loudly gabbing away into their walkie-talkie - good way to get shot.
It's very good.
Easily prepared for six months here and adding more month by month. We have a very diverse group that lives here that compliments each others skills and abilities. We take nothing for granted though. We still need to finalize our communication plan.
I have to disagree. Unless there is a biologic, nuclear, or natural catastrophe at your doorstep staying put is your best bet. Let’s be honest here.
How many of us can claim we are in superior physical fitness to outrun an angry hungry mob of refugees while we carry 400 lbs of rifles and ammunition?
How many roads are available to nether-regions that 90% of our towns plan on evacuating to if TSHTF? How many cars can travel the same distance on 1 tank of gasoline?
Is it more likely to have a steady supply of water in a small municipality catastrophe that recovers 5 days after calamity or find a fresh supply of unguarded well water on rural property?
Can you carry enough ammo, food, and firearms to reclaim property from an occupying defensive force?
Are you willing to die for a scratch of land with your corn and potatoes or willing to wait in line for some MREs from the local civil defense force?
Unless you are already in your cabin in the woods with a full supply of sundries and ammo you are stuck in a suburb like I am. In my opinion it is best to make your life as unassuming as possible and stockpile your goods in a defensible house.
I live alone with a newly adopted dog (God bless him, a McNab cattle dog sweet as can be). On our own property we are a force to be reckoned with. On the road to some cabin in the woods where a million people will be heading to (I live in Sandpoint Idaho half the year and Kailua Oahu Hawaii the rest of the year) we are someone’s dinner.
I am always leery of most survivalist advice. Most of it assumes way too much.
