It’s no different than the newspaper classifieds. Sure some are scams, some are very bad scams, but that’s always been the case.

I use Craigslist all the time. Works great if you're not stupid. NEVER meet anyone other than an extremely public place. Never give out unneeded personal info. For a large purchase like a vehicle, don't bring cash and make it clear you aren't carrying cash. Meet at the bank where there are cameras and safety and you can document everything with checks and papers.
This poor old couple were naive and frankly dumb to drive to the middle of Pudunk, Nowhere.
