Everything an individual does, every choice he makes, is in his own self-interest. Even if he thinks he is sacrificing, he is sacrificing because he thinks it is "good" to sacrifice...and he wants to be "good".

Even if the mind is purely a physical manifestation (i.e., no soul), it is almost certainly a quantum mechanical one. Ergo, it is NOT deterministic.
