Kidnapping for ransom is common practice among Mexican cartels. One of my latina friends had her brother kidnapped. Granted he was a doctor in Mexico but it happens up here as well. Phoenix has had a problem with it.

While vacationing in southern Texas, a friends wife decided to cross over into Mexico to do some shopping for the day. She was kidnapped and held for three days until the husband coughed up several thousand American dollars to get her back, which he did. She was released unharmed and vowed to NEVER travel into Mexico again. She was a dumb ass for even going there alone in the first place.
