Charity and “helping the poor” should be voluntary, not forced at the end of a gun with taxes. That’s the difference!

Bingo. Charity is a personal action, not an impersonal one, and not forced or compelled.

I worked with a liberal that threw that “Jesus told us to help the poor” argument to me for raising taxes. I told him exactly what you said, and added that studies have shown that conservatives are generally more charitable with their own money.
