“Masters” are usually reflective of the society, which is precisely why they are so popular.

Wrong. It’s because their work generally stand up to the test of time. Equating popularity with master work is absurd. By that low standard the Kardashians are media masters.

They are these days. We elected Barack Obama president twice.

I didn’t recognize his name, but I did recognize his face when I looked for it. I thought he did a good enough job at ESPN. I’m not much into award shows of any kind, but he gave a heartfelt speech at the Espys earlier this year. If you have 15 minutes to spare, here’s the whole thing. If not, maybe let it load and then fast forward to about half way, where he starts his speech. I was touched.

Yep, it was right up there with Jimmy V’s speech, which reduced me to tears every time I watched it.

ESPN seems to be playing a tribute to him non-stop right now.

I’m the same way, did not know the name but knew the face. I’m not positive I like the early persona or style they showed of him as a news reporter on ESPN but nonetheless, saddened.

He had a helluva fight with cancer. Valiant man in that regard. I always admire courage in the face of adversity.

Very sorry to hear this news. RIP, Stuart Scott.

His talks on fighting cancer were very encouraging. (I was doing some transcription work for some extra cash, and just by chance, one of the jobs was a speech given by Stuart.)

This is the second piece of bad news in the last few days: A young mother I know of also passed away after a tough battle.

Their work stands the test of time . . . Because it’s popular and speaks to the people. The elitist, purist notion that slang or common culture destroys society is silly. America has been built on de-elitizing traditions and institutions. Scott absolutely was not Shakespeare, but was in the same tradition of de-elitizing stuff.
