(Updated 8:36 a.m.) SHANGHAI - A stampede killed at least 35 people during New Year's Eve celebrations in Shanghai, authorities said, possibly caused by people rushing to pick up fake money thrown from a building overlooking the city's famed Bund waterfront district.
The Shanghai government said that large crowds started to stampede in Chen Yi Square on the Bund just before midnight, with authorities working to rescue and aid the wounded.
It was not immediately clear what triggered the stampede, but state media and a witness said the incident was caused when people tried picking up fake money thrown from a building.

For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
Drag a hundred dollar bill through a trailer park....
At least it wasn’t a soccer riot.
I wouldn’t want to live with that stunt gone wrong.
This is so sad. Poor people were just trying to celebrate. I don’t even think it was greed so much as it was poor planning. The space is too small for so many people to have a money drop event.
The USA does the stampedes on Black Friday for cheap chinese imported junk scattered in Walmarts.
So that is how China celebrates New Year, wow.
As I recall, fake money is common in traditional Chinese celebrations. I’ve even seen it on funeral altars in Singapore, to help the dead in their next lives, as I recall.
So maybe the Commies stamped out traditions and now the people go nuts for fake yen.
I’ve seen fake goods from China on Canal Street.
These days, you have to go in the back of their tents or do a quick deal while they close.
All that madness over fake yens? Gosh its not like they were throwing smoked dog meat cubes as their delicious delicacy for good luck. Woof..
But, they can say the grass is greener...from where they stand...
Oh those irrepressible Amish teens.
The fool who threw out the phoney money should “spend” the rest of his life in prison for 35 murders...second degree murder?
Excellent connection.

My dad grew up in China and says the Chinese love money more than anything and will do anything for a buck
